The Eagles were held scoreless on their first two series as penalties stifled the opening drive. On the next possession a fumble on the exchange gave the ball to the Blazers at the Eagle 32 yard line. The Busco defense held its ground as Brient Hicks sacked the quarterback and Eric Kuznar made a stop. On the next play the Eagles got the ball back as Jason Nicodemus recovered an Eastside fumble. Cory Miller ran the ball in from a yard out capping off a six play drive covering 68 yards with 4:28 left in the first quarter. Eastside went for it on fourth down and two. They converted it with a 16 yard pass play but on the following play Miller picked off the Blazer pass and ran it back 58 yards to the eight yard line.
On the opening play of the second period Nicodemus crossed over from a yard out for a 14-0 Eagle lead. Joe Zumbrun recovered a Blazer fumble on their next play but the Blazers were able to pick the ball off in the end zone as the Eagles went for the quick strike. Defense held and the Eagle offense went right to work. Kane Johnson gained nine yards, Miller for seven more and Nicodemus burst through for 18 yards. Now inside the 20 yard line Miller ran for seven more and Nicodemus finished off the drive scoring from 12 yards out as he rolled over the defender for the touchdown. Hayden Kilgore picked off a Blazer pass to begin the next drive. Nicodemus took it from there as he went for 31 yards and then 23 more for the score making it 27-0 Eagles. Again the defense forced a fumble and Logan Harris recovered at the Blazer 32 yard line with just less than two minutes left in the half. Miller had runs of 10 and 11 yards in the drive before he carried the ball into the end zone, pushing the score to 34-0 at the half.
Eastside had the ball for the first four minutes of the second half but the Eagle defense held strong as they stopped the Blazers on a fourth and one try. Churubusco went to the ground game again with Cody Conwell gaining 18 yards on two carries on the drive. Miller crossed the goal line for the third time from 27 yards out. Another Zumbrun fumble recovery set up Nicodemus’ fourth score of the night from five yards out, 47-0 after three quarters.
The defense stopped Eastside again on a fourth down try and on the second play Braydon Shively took the ball around the end for a 9 yards touchdown run. After another defensive stop the offense went on a sixteen play drive running out the clock. Churubusco wins 54-0 for their second shutout in a row and improving to 4-0 on the season.
The Eagles will host Angola for Homecoming this Friday night. The Eagles have never lost to the Hornets as they hold a perfect 7-0 all-time record.
