Football ~ Eagles come up short at Culver

Plagued with turnovers and penalties throughout the game, Busco ran out of time to mount a comeback.

After Culver intercepted a Jay Petrie pass in the first series of the game, then scoring on a four yard run, Busco trailed 7-0 at the end of the first break. Then trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Busco scored on an eight yard run from junior Braydon Shively. A two point conversion made the score 14-8 at the half.

“Our kids played hard the whole game and did what we asked them to,” said Coach Lee Etzler after the game. “We told them that penalties and turnovers in big games will hurt us.”

Busco started the second half with the ball but couldn’t come up with any points as turnovers turned into points for Culver. Culver would score two more times making the score 28-8 at the end of the third.

The Eagles still had a chance to pull off the victory when senior fullback Jason Nicodemus scored on an eight yard run in the fourth quarter and another two point conversion making the score 28-16. Nicodemus ended the game with 253 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Culver would go on to score again, sealing the victory for them, making the final 35-16.

Churubusco amassed 406 total yards on 381 yards rushing and 25 yards passing.

“We ended up with good offensive yards,” said Etzler. Unfortunately, the most yards doesn’t win the game.”

The Eagles are now 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the NECC and still can win the conference by beating Fairfield this Friday and Lakeland the next.

The game this Friday is at Fairfield starting at 7 p.m. then Lakeland at home on October 12.
