Born December 9, 1920, in Swayzee, Ind., she was a daughter of the late Oscar L. and Minnie B. (Clanin) Gentis. Esther married Julius Shelley on March 24, 1946; he preceded her in death on March 29, 2005. She was a former resident of Fort Wayne, and lived there for many years. She retired as a waitress and cook from Fort Wayne Country Club in 1983 after 24 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Russiaville and before her illness, enjoyed gardening and spending time with her dogs.
Survivors include her daughter, Joellen (William) Hart of Kokomo; grandsons, Michael W. (Megan Mahoney) Hart of Carmel, Matthew C. Hart of Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota; and sister, Joan Spurgeon of Churubusco. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Von, Don, and Walter Gentis; and sister, Mable Atkins.
Private services were held. Memorial donations may be made to the Missions Department at First Baptist Church, 260 W. Main Street, Russiaville, IN 46979. Arrangements were by Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 314 N. Washington Street, Swayzee, Ind.
