The General fund where the Trustees, Clerk, Police Department and the Crossing Guard salaries are accounted from went from $309,625 in 2012 to $337,900 for 2013. The MVH fund increased from $44,000 in 2012 to $48,000 in 2013. The Park salaries went from $31,500 in 2012 to $32,800 in 2013.
In other Council news:
• The Council approved a 17%+ increase in the employee Health Insurance plan.
Insurance representative Mark Coonrod from Star Insurance was on hand to answer questions that the Council had. Coonrod told the Council that he could “shop” for a different carrier but the industry average increase has been in the double figures for the last three years.
Council President Frank Kessler said that the Town could go for higher deductibles (to lower costs) but he didn’t want to do that because the Town could afford the increase at this point.
• The Downtown Mainstreet Improvements continue with Facade Grants being given to Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in the amount of $4,369.81 and The Bargain House $5,000.
Kessler said that the program has been a success with four businesses taking advantage of the matching grant. Roughly $19,000 has been awarded this year.
• The Council gave Town Marshal Mike Engle permission to hire a part-time officer to help fill in.
• Council member Alan Malcolm, also a member of Whitley County Solid Waste Board, reported that during his meeting with Solid Waste the recycling company may increase pickup from every other week to every week next year. Malcolm will keep them posted.
The next regular scheduled Town Council meeting is on Wednesday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Hall.
