The second match was at home and again the Eagles won against Westview.
“The team came out very flat and it showed,” explained Coach Riesen. “We felt that we had turned a corner in the Lakeland match, but our guys came out timid, and did not take control of the match. Westview has some very talented guys and our staff knew that we would need to come out ready to wrestle, in several of our matches we obviously were not. We came away with the win, but our performance was not what I expect it to be. Wormcastle took a tough loss. He had a good kid and was letting him control a lot of the match up to that point. We always explain to our guys the importance of learning from your matches you don’t perform well in. His attitude was where we want it after the match. Brandon is focused this year and will learn from this match.”
Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Carroll to face Northrop, Elkhart Central, Carroll, Eastside, and Garrett.
The Eagles defeated Northrop 44-27, Elkhart Central 57-21, Eastside 40-36, and Garrett 46-30. Churubusco was defeated by Carroll 53-17.
“We came out and wrestled some really solid teams, really well to start Saturday,” said Coach Sam Riesen. “Our guys were focused, and ready to meet the challenges at hand. We knew that Northrop had a solid team. They were undefeated going into our matchup so we knew that we had to be ready from our first match on. We came out and wrestled solid, and fundamentally and got nice victories in both matches.”
“Carroll was a dual that we knew we would have to wrestle about perfectly to win,” explained Coach Riesen. “They are a very talented group, and our guys really did not step to the challenge how we hoped that they would. It’s a learning experience as the season goes on, and wrestling top quality opponents is what gets you to that next level, so hopefully we can grow and learn from that match as a team.”
“We came out a little banged up from the Carroll match, and it had a residual effect against Eastside,” said Coach Riesen. “They have some solid guys, and were able to get a few pins against us, that they didn’t have last time. Wormcastle was out for the rest of the day after the Carroll match, and 145 ended up being a pretty big swing. I do think that the Eastside match really refocused us for Garrett. We have a bit of a rivalry going with Garrett so it’s always nice to get a victory against them. I know our kids really wanted that one. They are a really talented and respected program, so we are happy with that victory.”
Going 7-0 on the week was Brian Richardson in the 195 pound weight class and Jason Nicodemus in the 220 pound weight class. Also going 6-1 on the week was Chase Downing in the 126 pound weight class, Shane Shroyer in the 132 pound weight class, Joey Heaton in the 152 weight class, and Sam Siddons in the 182 weight class.
