Healthier Moms and Babies will hold its second annual Diaper Dash 5k on Saturday, June 3, at the Parkview Family YMCA Pavillion, 10001 Dawsons Creek Blvd.
The event’s purpose is to raise awareness of the organization’s mission as well as collect diapers for families in need. Early registration is $25, late registration is $35 and diapers are not required with registration but greatly appreciated.
Allen County has the third highest infant mortality rate in the state of Indiana, so the mission of Healthier Moms and Babies is to prevent infant mortalities in the area. The organization provides both support and education for moms-to-be in the home environment and uses diapers as an incentive for mothers to meet goals and schedule prenatal appointments to promote a healthy pregnancy.
Last year was the first Diaper Dash, and members of Healthier Moms and Babies say it was a success. About 100 runners participated, bringing in more than 1,000 diapers. Last year was also a successful year for the organization given that 106 healthy babies were delivered in the county, which is double from previous years, and only one baby in the NICU.
While the Diaper Dash is a 5k, participants can choose to run or walk. Those in attendance are also encouraged to dress up in a diaper, baby costume or anything else baby related.
