After dropping the first set 25-23 Churubusco rallied back and took the next three sets to pick up their first win of the season. They fought back and won the second set 25-20 and then 27-25 in the third set. In the final set the Eagles won 25-21 to claim the victory.
Three Eagles had double figures in kills led by Heather Monk with 14, Morgan Young and Danielle Pippenger each with 11. There were ten serving aces on the night for the Eagles as Lacey Pulley and Gabby Jones had three apiece while Pippenger added two. Chandler Blake was all over the court tallying 26 digs to led the Eagles. Young added 23 digs and Brooke Herendeen 17 digs for the match.
“We were very pleased with our team’s determination to dig deep to get this victory,” explains Coach Trinda Goings. “We thought they showed great maturity in the win. We have been talking all summer about how serving, passing and back-court defense were going to be key for us this season since we typically will be smaller than our opponent. Tonight was a great confidence builder for the team.”
At Bluffton on Thursday the Eagles lost the first set 25-21 but overcame and won the next three 25-21, 25-23 and 25-21 to defeat the Tigers. Young led with 22 digs followed by Pippenger and Pulley with 21 each and Herendeen added 20 more. Monk had 18 kills while Pippenger had 10. Pulley and Pippenger each had three serving aces and Jones added two of her own.
“We weren’t quite as sharp against Bluffton as we were on Tuesday,” stated Coach Goings. “But what stood out the most is that the momentum was swinging our way towards the end of the first set. This was another step in the right direction for our team.”
The Lady Eagles will be at home on Thursday against Eastside and at Central Noble next Tuesday. Come on out and support your Lady Eagles and cheer them on to a couple of Conference wins.
“We truly played as a team,”commented Coach Goings when asked about team leadership. “The team attitude and determination was led by the two senior co-captains, Heather Monk and Morgan Young.”
