Playing against an always tough Heritage team Churubusco started out erratic. They lost the first game 25-13, and it looked like a short night for the Lady Eagles.
“The first game was all about unforced errors and us giving away points,” said Coach Mark Bankson. “You don’t do that when you have the opportunity to compete.”
But the Eagles didn’t give up as they forced Heritage to play their game, taking games two and three by scores of 25-20 and 25-17.
In game four Heritage took control early and paced their way to a 25-19 win, forcing game five.
The score bounced back-and-forth until Churubusco took the lead 8-7. Then the Lady Eagles put a couple points on the board and came away with a 15-12 win to beat Heritage three games to two.
“We wanted to control the momentum of the game,” explained Coach Bankson. “As long as we can do that it gives us a better chance to win the game. With Conference and Sectionals coming up this is the kind of momentum we need to have going into these tournaments.”
Last Tuesday the Lady Eagles defeated Lakeland 25-22, 15-25, 25-18 and 25-17.
Thursday ‘Busco lost to Fairfield 25-8, 25-9 and 25-12.
Churubusco now heads into the Conference tourney with some much needed confidence. The NECC tourney will take place Thursday and Saturday, with Sectionals getting under way the following Thursday.
