An icy U.S. 33 was closed in both directions for about five hours Tuesday morning as crews worked to clear the highway of ice. Officials said tractor-trailers weren’t able climb the hill, as seen above, due to the ice. Traffic was backed up for several miles. Above, Indiana Department of Transportation crews spread salt on U.S. 33 between Churubusco and the Noble County line. There were multiple crashes and slide offs in Whitley, Noble and Allen counties on Tuesday morning after ice blanketed the area. Many school districts were also closed.
CHURUBUSCO — U.S. 33 was shut down in both directions north of Churubusco Tuesday morning.
The ice-covered highway was deemed dangerous and was closed by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Churubusco Town Marshal Mike Engle said tractor-trailers weren’t able to make it up the hill. He noted that there were a few crashes in the area Tuesday morning, none with major injuries.
