Trine women win NCAA opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Trine University’s women’s basketball team outscored DePauw 40-21 in the second half Friday night to defeat the Tigers 65-50 in a first-round game of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Thunder (25-3) will take on Illinois Wesleyan (25-3) in a second-round game today at 8 p.m. The Titans won their first-round contest over Marietta (Ohio) Friday night.

In game one Friday, the Thunder shot 51 percent from the floor (22-43), made 16-of-20 free throws and outrebounded DePauw 32-26. Trine held the Tigers to 35 percent shooting from the field (19-54) and only make 7-of-10 free throws.

Former area standouts led the Thunder. Garrett’s Brandi Dawson had 21 points. DeKalb High graduate Hayley Martin had 18 points, 10 rebounds, five blocked shots and two steals. Former Churubusco Eagle Montana Martin had eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. She hit three three-pointers and also grabbed three rebounds.

Katy Steers had seven points, four rebounds and three assists for Trine. Cassidy Williams had five rebounds and four assists.

Sydney Kopp had 16 points and six rebounds for DePauw, who finished its season at 25-3. Maya Howard had 13 points and four rebounds.
