The Churubusco Eagles opened the 2012 season with a 46-13 win over the Fremont Eagles. It marks the eighth season the Eagles have won their opening game.
It didn’t take long for the hometown crowd to have something to cheer about. On the third play from scrimmage Jason Nicodemus broke through the Fremont defense for a 45 yard touchdown run. Parker Conrad added the extra-point to make it 7-0 Busco. The Eagles scored quickly again on their second series following a bad snap on a Fremont punt attempt. Jay Petrie would run behind his blockers 12 yards to the end zone and with Conrad’s kick the Eagles led 14-0. Just four and a half minutes into the game.
“It’s great to be out on the field tonight,” said senior quarterback Jay Petrie. “I have complete confidence in the offensive line. I knew if I did what I needed to do, they would take care of the rest.”
Cory Miller set up the third Eagle touchdown as he returned the Fremont punt 53 yards to the 16 yard line. Nicodemus had runs of seven and six yards to get to the nine. Then Miller found pay dirt as he followed his blocking from nine yards out giving the Eagles a 20-0 lead.
But Fremont would not go away as they returned the ensuing kickoff back to the Eagles’ 38 yard line. Six plays later they scored on a two yard run by Nate Beatty. Churubusco led 20-6 after one quarter of play.
The second period Busco came out moving the ball with Nicodemus getting a 32 yard pickup but the drive stalled and they punted back to Fremont. Both defenses held their ground and nobody scored in the quarter.
“I thought the defense played pretty hard all night,” commented Coach Lee Etzler. “A couple different times we had some trouble wrapping them up which led them to their first downs but we rotated a lot of kids in there tonight and gave those kids some varsity experience.”
Fremont began the third quarter throwing the ball with success gaining 30 yards in four plays. They would score on a great catch by Ricky Short on a pass from Chandler McDowell from five yards out and with Beatty’s kick made it 20-13 Churubusco. But the Eagles answered quickly as Cody Conwell ran the kickoff back 52 yards to the 21 yard line. Nicodemus rambled down to the three yard line and then Petrie took it the last three yards for the score. Then after shutting down Fremont the Eagles again struck quick as Petrie connected with Logan Harris for a 57 yard pass down to the 11 yard line. Miller carried for nine yards and then took it into the end zone giving the Eagles a 34-13 advantage. Churubusco would add another score as Miller intercepted the ball and returned it for his third touchdown of the game making it 40-13 Eagles.
“They ran the slant the play before and I recognized it right away to be able to get the ball and make the interception and run it back for the touchdown,” was how Miller described his defensive score. “We did alright tonight. We still have quite a few things to improve on,” said senior Cory Miller. “There are a few things we need to hone in on defense, like the bad mistakes that turned into penalties and missed tackles.”
Chandler Brown finished the scoring for Busco as he ran it in from four yards out to give Churubusco a 46-13 win. Brown had a 32 yard run and Kane Johnson had 15 yards to help setup the touchdown.
“We had some penalties and a turnover that ended drives that hurt us tonight,” stated Coach Etzler. “But Fremont played very well tonight. They had some tough situations where they were able to get those first downs. A lot of credit goes to Fremont. They are going to win some games this year.”
Churubusco ran for 259 yards on 32 carries, Nicodemus led the way with 137 yards on 11 attempts. Petrie was two of five passing for 59 yards and he rushed for 15 yards on two carries, both of them being touchdown runs.
The Eagles travel to Central Noble this Friday night to face the Cougars in another Conference matchup.
