The Churubusco Eagles lost on the road to county rival Columbia City 76-43 on Tuesday night then fell to West Noble 56-48 at home on Saturday night.
Coach McBride told his team going in that the Columbia City team was hungry for the win after losing to Churubusco 34-32 last season. With the Columbia City tough press the Eagles struggled right from the start. Columbia City outscored the Eagles 18-8 in the opening quarter.
Opening second quarter Columbia City went on a 16-1 run and that helped put the game out of reach by the half with a 40-15 lead.
In the third period Columbia City extended their lead to thirty-three points.
Kyle Mathewson and Jordan Turner led the Eagles in scoring with eight points each.
On Saturday the Eagles hosted the Chargers from West Noble. Mathewson led the way for Churubusco scoring a game high 27 points.
The Eagles remained winless on the season as they fell to the Chargers 56-48. After trailing 14-9 in the opening quarter, the Eagles pulled to within four at the half trailing 24-20.
“We got man-handled on the boards tonight,” said Coach McBride. “We need to have a better effort on the boards than we did tonight.”
Churubusco fought back to within one point late in the fourth quarter. The score was 43-42 with just over two minutes remaining but the Chargers dashed the Eagles hopes as they ran off four quick points. They never let Churubusco any closer, as they pulled away to the 56-48 victory.
“Close games come down to free throws and rebounding and we didn’t do either one of those very well tonight,” commented Coach McBride, on his team’s fifty percent shooting effort from the free-throw line Saturday night.
The boys will be in action Friday at Prairie Heights, their last game before Christmas break.
