“At this point, we will probably not have a website for this year’s event,” says Laura Gater, chairman of the Whitley County Community Christmas Celebration. “We are still trying to find someone who will donate his or her time to build us a website that will feature pictures of past Community Christmases, and where people will be able to sign up online for a part, which will make Wendi’s job much easier.”
Donations will be requested and accepted inside the Courthouse on both nights for the Whitley County Energy Assistance Fund, which helps people pay their winter energy (heating) bills. Scott’s used to match funds that Community Christmas raised, according to Gater, but that is no longer done. Donations can be made to the greeters inside the Courthouse, who will be holding donation cans.
“We would like to let people know that we need their support for the Energy Assistance program, which helps a lot of families in Whitley County pay for their heating bills each winter,” says Gater. “Please take a minute to donate a few dollars to help on December 4 or 5. Last year, our donations totaled less than $200, and usually we raise more than $300. It’s just a goodwill event that we do for a much-needed community service.”
Planning for this year’s Community Christmas Celebration is moving along like clockwork. Volunteers are at their tasks of mending costumes, calling volunteers, preparing to bake cookies, calling musicians and singers, testing the sound equipment, and hanging flyers.
“The Community Christmas Celebration is all about people coming together, not about churches,” says Jack Hierholzer, construction chairman.
Homemade cookies will once again be needed to feed all of the visitors to this event. The cookies will be accepted at the Courthouse on December 4 and 5 – more details closer to the date.
Please contact Anita Harris, choir director and special music coordinator, at 260/691-2787, if you are interested in being part of the Community Choir or in playing an instrument or singing either or both nights. The Community Choir rehearsal date (only one rehearsal) will be announced soon, and the date will be publicized.
The next meeting of the Community Christmas Celebration will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the Columbia City United Methodist Church Library. Everyone is welcome to attend.
