Pursuit ends in fatal crash

WHITLEY COUNTY – A pursuit between a Pierceton man and a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputy ended in a fatal crash in Whitley County June 22.

William D. Kent, 57, of Pierceton, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet pickup, which was reported stolen from Whitley County. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle heading eastbound on County Road 400 South, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop with Kent, according to a police report.

When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle in Kosciusko County, Kent failed to yield and a pursuit continued throughout Kosciusko and Whitley counties.

During the pursuit, Kent slid off of the wet road at the intersection of State Road 5 and County Road 400 South, striking the vehicle into two trees at about 2 a.m., according to the report.

The vehicle was totaled in the crash and Kent was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
