Five Years Ago

Pastor Edward and Faye Thompson celebrated ten years of ministry at Good News Baptist Church.

Dana Safety Committee celebrated four years of No Lost Time accidents.

An open house retirement party was held for retiring President of Farmers & Merchants Bank, Monte Lepper. Jeff Gump was named the new president.

A benefit was held at Egolf’s IGA for Shayna Lowe, who was injured in an ATV accident. The American Legion Post 157, VFW Post 3846, Smith Township Fire Department and Girl Scout Troop 803 were among those who helped organize the event.

Max and Lois Ann Herendeen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at Merriam Christian Chapel.

Jorel and Tiffany Longardner announced the birth of their daughter, Jaelie Payten.

Ten Years Ago

Ellen Crawford was named Whitley County Junior Miss. First runner-up was Holly Samuels, second runner-up was Emily Plasterer of Churubusco.  She was named winner of the Poise Category.

Loren Schaefer started a new nuisance wildlife control business, All Creatures Great and Small.

Marla Martinez won the third place Bronze Medal in the girls 8 & Under 50 Meter Long Course Backstroke Swimming competition at Indiana University in Bloomington.

An open house was held for Kaye VanPelt who retired from the Churubusco License Branch after 14 years of service.

U.S. Senator Evan Bayh asked President Bush to use all available resources to expedite the destruction of a dangerous chemical agent stored at a depot in central Indiana, and to tighten security around the facility.

Dr. Lew and Peggy Wise celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Eagle’s Nest Event Center.

25 Years Ago

The Churubusco Police Department was looking at breathalizers to test suspected intoxicated drivers. They had to take the suspects to Columbia City to be tested.

Whitley County EMS was awarded the Advance Life Support “Provider of the Year” award by Governor Orr.

Churubusco Woodworking Company, Inc., was awarded the “Top Ten” Achievement Award. The award recognized the local lumber and building materials dealer for being in the top ten percentage increases in purchases made.

F. Dale and Margaret Barrett celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Washington, D.C.

Mr. and Mrs. Landry Linn announced the birth of their daughter, Michelle Renee.

Mathew and Mary Tiltman announced the birth of their son, Kenyth Alan.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vanderford announced the birth of their daughter, Whitley Lee.

50 Years Ago

Final rites were held for Dr. Robert Luckey, whose family established the Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake.

The Komets began training in Indianapolis in preparation for their tenth successive year in Fort Wayne.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sutton celebrated their 50th anniversary quietly due to illness in the family. They urged friends to send cards and letters to their grandson Bill, a victim of polio.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Creech announced the birth of their son, Mark Allen.

“Deadly Companions” starring Chill Wills, Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith was playing at the Columbia Theater.
