COLUMBIA CITY -- Helen E. “Gene” Lahr, 93, of rural Columbia City, died Friday morning, May 18, 2012 at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since January 16, 2001.
She was born September 21, 1918 in Garrett, Indiana a daughter of John F. and Florence (Ladig) Osterman. Her formative years were spent in the Garrett and Huntertown areas.
In 1936 she was united in marriage to Floyd Ervin Hall. They made their home in Wallen. Mr. Hall died in 1944.
On May 21, 1945 she was united in marriage to Lester E. Lahr. They made their home in Fort Wayne, later purchasing a farm near Churubusco where they resided nearly 20 years. In 1971 they moved to rural Columbia City. Mr. Lahr died September 28, 1995.
She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church Women, V.F.W. Post #5512 Auxiliary and former member of Women of the Moose where she held all chairs and was Senior Regent.
Surviving relatives include two children, Carol (Ronny) Gillum and Robert (Karen) Lahr, all of Churubusco; three grandchildren, Sherri (Steve) Crawford, Amy (John) Mickle and Jeremy (Michele) Lahr; five great grandchildren, Jacob Crawford, Abby Mickle, Madison Lahr, Alexandria Lahr and Mitchel Lahr; and a brother, Martin “Bud” Osterman of Fort Wayne.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Leon Hall and a brother, Alva Osterman.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, New Haven. The visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Hope Lutheran Church Building Fund.
