Smith-Green Community Schools Interim Superintendent Ralph Bailey is challenging all faculty and staff to “look to the future to make a difference in the staff, community and ultimately [SGCS] students.”
At Monday evening’s School Board meeting, Bailey shared a packet that he gave to all SGCS faculty and staff.
“My theme this year is ‘Growing Together’ and ‘I Can if I Think I Can,’” Bailey wrote in his letter to staff members. “By ‘working together’ we ‘can’ continue to make a good school corporation even better.”
Construction on the building project is set to begin on August 21, so SGCS staff asks that parents exercise caution around the jobsites and follow the drop-off and pick-up guidelines as set out by SGCS Business Manager and Transportation Director Todd Fleetwood. Fleetwood said parents of Jr-Sr HS students should enter the school grounds from Washington Street and exit on Tulley Street. Parents of elementary students should drop off and pick up students in the back of the school. Fleetwood will provide a map with guidelines at registration and it will also be available online.

In other Board news:

Andrew Deming resigned as Assistant Principal of CJSHS, effective August 8, 2012. CJSHS Principal Jim Folland resigned his extra-curricular position as CHS Assistant Baseball Coach, effective immediately. CJSHS teacher Wendy Sieber requested an extension of her medical leave through the 2012-13 school year.

The Board approved the support staff contract agreement for Mary Richardson to be employed as a temporary speech and language pathologist for the 2012-13 school year at a rate of $38,464. Richardson is filling in while Andrea Bartlett is on maternity leave, with a possible return date of March 1, 2013.

The Board approved the following extra-curricular positions: Paul Sade—Associate Athletic Director; Todd Lortie—Track Assistant Coach Boys/Girls; Lori Straub—8th grade Volleyball; Paige Moore—6th grade Volleyball;

The Board approved a revision in the Federal Employee Drug/Alcohol testing policy because it was misstated in the Transportation Handbook. The Federal policy states, “No employee shall perform safety sensitive functions within four hours after using alcohol.” However, the district’s policy is set at eight hours to ensure student safety.

Business Manager Todd Fleetwood presented several reports, including a financial repot of extracurricular accounts, second quarter budget report and update and 2013 budget development.

Fleetwood reviewed the budget reduction plan that is in place for 2012 and 2013. Fleetwood described his report and plan as a “worst case scenario” and said that an increase in ADM count (average daily membership) would have a positive effect on the budget.

The district’s cash balance, according to Fleetwood, “has been and will be an asset to the corporation.” The cash balance allows the district a cushion to have a multi-year reduction plan rather than making cuts all at one time.

“I’m really impressed with this kid,” Superintendent Bailey said, referring to Fleetwood and the budget packet he presented to Board members. “He’s learned a lot in the past few years.”

Important dates to mark on the calendar include:

Jr-Sr HS Student Registration—Wednesday, August 8 from 12-7 p.m. (CES Gym)
