by Katie Wagner After nine years of teaching in the science department at Churubusco High School, Jim Folland will now lead Churubusco Jr./Sr. High School as the principal.
Folland spearheaded the Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry program in 2004 and has inspired students to excel both in and out of the classroom. A perennial favorite, Folland has been nominated for several teaching awards over the years. Interim Superintendent Ralph Bailey said that the School Board worked quickly over the past week to narrow the 25 applicant pool down to six candidates. Ultimately, the Board chose Folland because he possesses the characteristics the Board was looking for in a principal: compassion for people, strong leadership and love for kids. “If you’re going to lead, you have to love,” Bailey said. Board member Tanya Young welcomed Folland aboard as part of the administrative team. “We are excited to watch you do with the building like you did with the science program,” Young said. Folland said, on behalf of himself and his family, that he is excited to have the opportunity to lead as the CJSHS Principal. “I am ecstatic to work with the staff and students,” he said, adding that he wants to continue to build relationships. School Board President Cathy Petrie, who was out of town, said via email, “Jim Folland brings passion to the principal position.” The Board voted unanimously to hire Folland effective August 1, 2012, with an initial two-year contract of 220 days per year and an annual salary of $80,000 and administrator benefits.
