What do Eagles, Knoxville, Tennessee, and a Solar Cell fueling a Solar Proto-type have in common?  They involve the “Neon Gummi Bears” team from Busco  attending the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals held at the University of Tennessee from Wednesday, May 23 through Saturday, May 26.
The Busco DI team was one of 30 teams sent to Globals from Indiana to compete this year. There were 1275 teams present from DI programs in 45 states and 22 countries around the globe.  Over 18000 team members, coaches, parents, appraisers and DI officials attended Global 2012 competition and activities.
The “Neon Gummi Bears” team members are: Avery Dirr, Rachel Jones, Jenna Shambaugh, Caitie Eakins, Robby Pope, and Brandi Herron. The team was coached by Rachele Shambaugh and Julie Mast. Dena Pope became the assistant coach for Global attendance. Rob Pope drove a box truck down to Tennessee filled with the props for the team to use during their competition. Val Eakins, Caitie’s mom, drove the van full of the team, coaches, and Valerie Pope, a sister supporter.
The team was housed at the Airport Hilton near the UT campus. At the first meal, the Busco team befriended an elementary level team from Columbia – they became their “BUDDY” team. It was so fun to make a connection of this level with an international DI team. Before leaving Globals they shared pins, t- shirts, hats and their hearts with their new Columbian friends.
Year 2012 marks their eighth consecutive year to have Busco teams attend Global competitions, but they need to discuss their “firsts” ...from this Global year! It was the first time a team at Globals won a Renaissance Award at the Global level. It was the first time they had ever skyped the Busco end of the year

Year 2012 marks their eighth consecutive year to have Busco teams attend Global competitions, but they need to discuss their “firsts” ...from this Global year! It was the first time a team at Globals won a Renaissance Award at the Global level. It was the first time they had ever skyped the Busco end of the year awards program via computer so the team could participate in awards and scholarships from the community and school.  And it was the first time they became a Buddy Team with an international team from Cati, Columbia.

Teams from all over the Globe get out their 3M duct tape, create costumes, and attend a Duct Tape Ball as part of the Global DI experience. This Ball is held in the Thompson-Boling Arena stadium  each year.

A band rocks the place while teams enjoy some dancing and bonding time.

So, after graduation ceremonies, opening ceremony, closing ceremony, special Renaissance awards, the 3M Duct Tape Ball, “Glo” Ball with techno music, Pep Rally, Challenge B Solar Stage Performance, Instant Challenge, Pin Trading, and the After Party rocking out, they pulled out of Knoxville, Tennessee with a van full of DI team members and coaches and parents – exhausted from the awesome week but already  making plans for the 2013 upcoming DI season.
