The scholarships, available through the Whitley County Community Foundation, are awarded to a graduating female and male student athlete from Churubusco High School preparing to attend college. The first scholarships were awarded last spring to Alexis Bankson and Jordan Hamilton.
Andy Spencer was to graduate last spring with the Churubusco High School Class of 2010. Megan Young was to graduate this coming spring with the CHS Class of 2011. Both were tragically lost to us on July 16, 2009.
The memorial event began with prayer conducted by Jon Pelz of Youth For Christ and the release of a balloon from each of the approximate 250 people in attendance at the start of the celebration. Attached to each balloon was a message containing the address /andyandmegan.shutterfly. com” a website dedicated to Megan and Andy, and the request that whoever finds the message log onto the website to view their story and comment. By the following evening, one balloon was already reported as found in Halifax County, VA!
Food, drinks and other items were provided by many sponsors, including the Noble County Pork Farmers, Brevin’s Egolf’s IGA, Churubusco News, Gonink, Sav U Mor, Magic Wand, Valero, Vinyl DeSigns, Kroger, Collins United Methodist Church, Faith Lutheran Church and a host of wonderful family members and dear friends. Music was performed by Royce Binion and the group “Cheezits.” Memorial items are still available with a contribution to the scholarship funds—if interested, contact the Young and Spencer families.
