Mayer headed to golf regional

KENDALVILLE – Churubusco senior Trey Mayer advances to regionals after Churubusco golf competed in its sectional hosted by East Noble at Noble Hawk Golf Course Friday.

“He (Trey Mayer) hit the ball great, just couldn’t get any putts to fall,” said head coach Ryan Mayer. “That’s the way golf goes sometimes but he has some great momentum going into the regional.”

Churubusco shot a 340 overall. The Eagles came in sixth out of 12 teams, but needed to land in the top three spots to advance as a team. Carroll, Leo and Angola led the sectional and advanced, respectively.

Mayer led the Eagles with 76 strokes. He placed third out of the individual golfers whose teams didn’t advance. Dakota Barkley was the next-best Eagle at 84 strokes. The senior ended his high school golf career with his four-year low.

“Dakota just had one of those days where he was hitting the ball solid from tee to green. It was a joy to watch, and a great way to play your last high school round,” said Ryan Mayer.

Mike Erwin shot 89, Wyatt Gillenwater had a 91 and Wyatt Johnson carded a 92.

“The rest of the team struggled a bit,” said Ryan Mayer. “If you told me Trey and Dakota shot 76-84, I would really like our chances to get out as a team, but that’s not the way it went. Mike Erwin is a great golfer unfortunately for him, he had his worst rounds of the year in the last two tournaments. Our team will definitely miss him along with the other three seniors.”

“I’m really proud of my freshman Wyatt Johnson. He had really tough first nine holes, but then came right back with a 40 the last nine. I look for Wyatt Gillenwater and Wyatt Johnson to lead this team next year.”

Mayer will compete at the Warsaw regional at Stonehenge Golf Club, 8 a.m. Thursday.
