The Little River Wetlands Project will accept submissions for its Earth Day Fort Wayne 2018 rain barrel contest through Jan. 31.

Anyone in the northeast Indiana area is welcome to participate. The contest is open to any interested school, grade or class from preschool to college level. Homeschoolers and scout groups are also welcome. There will be a separate contest for adults and children groups. There is a maximum of 30 groups.

The theme is anything related to Earth Day. LRWP recommends reserving a barrel by Weds. Jan. 31, as spaces fill up quickly.

Participants must provide: paint (exterior flat latex with a clear coat seal), transportation and an artistic view. Each group should email a short paragraph describing their barrel design and inspiration, as well as a group picture to display at the event, to Freya Berntson at f.berntson@lrwp.org.

Groups should also submit an application by email or by mail to Little River Wetland Project, 5000 Smith Rd., Fort Wayne, IN 46804, by Wednesday, Jan. 31. Applications are available at www.facebook.com/LittleRiverWetlands/.

Contestants will be notified when barrels are ready. Pick-up will be at the Aqua Indiana office, 14421 W. Illinois Rd., Fort Wayne. They can also be reached at 625-4700. Completed barrels are to be dropped off Sunday, April 22, at 12:30 p.m. at the Earth Day Fort Wayne event at Eagle Marsh, 6801 Engle Rd., Fort Wayne.

At the event, which runs from 1-5 p.m., attendees can expect more activities, displays and speakers, in addition to its traditional activities. People will also get a close look at a tractor and Tesla to learn how these machines work and how they help Eagle Marsh and the planet. This year will again feature food trucks, a farmer’s market, and lots of fun educational activities.

Barrels have been donated by Craft Laboratories, Inc. Decorated barrels will be on display and purchased at a silent auction at Earth Day Fort Wayne. Awards will be given to the top three barrels, as judged by Aqua Indiana. A people’s choice barrel will also be voted on by Earth Day Fort Wayne visitors.

People can call Little River Wetlands Project at 478-2515 for more information.
