LAGRANGE — Senior Night did not go as planned for Lakeland’s boys soccer team Thursday as it lost 4-0 to Wawasee.
The Lakers were missing seven players due to disciplinary measures. Six were suspended by coach Carlos Albor for not attending practice on Wednesday. Senior Devon Ballines, one of Lakeland’s top players, began serving a three-match suspension for receiving his second red card of the season during Tuesday’s home shootout loss to Angola.
Ballines will miss the remainder of the regular season and will be back for the Class 2A Wawasee Sectional on the first week of October. The Lakers end the regular season with two more Saturday road matches, at Elkhart Christian this coming Saturday and at Sturgis, Michigan, on Sept. 30.
Albor said Ballines’ emotions have gotten the best of him, and was disappointed in the other six players who missed practice.
“We lack heart and discpline,” Albor said. “Players not stepping up for practice… I don’t want to reward them for what they didn’t deserve.
“Credit to their (Wawasee’s) coaches and players. But I felt like we lost to ourselves.”
The Warriors (5-4-3 overall) scored two goals in each half. Dylan DeWitt, Ethan Carey, Ryan Edington and Chris Pena each had a goal.
Albor was proud of the effort of his guys who did play.
“I did not care about the score. I wanted to see guys who wanted to be out there busting their butts,” Albor said. “I’m proud of the guys. I’m proud of our seniors. Hayden (Kreider) and Fabian (Altamira) haven’t seen much action this season and played hard.
Lakeland has four seniors in Ballines, Kreider, Altamira and Enrique Duran. Duran got hurt in the first half and did not return.
