CHURUBUSCO — After losing the first round of the Northeast Corner Conference tournament, Garrett’s girls basketball players took out their frustrations on Churubusco Thursday evening, winning 41-25 in a consolation game.
The Railroaders took a 10-3 lead in the first quarter, which was extended to 17-8 at halftime.
The teams played a more competitive third quarter, 15-14, but the Railroaders’ defense prevailed in the fourth stanza, holding ’Busco to just three points in the last eight minutes.
Leading in scoring for Garrett were Drue Bodey with 13 points, Lexi Baver with nine points and Makenzie Casselman with seven.
Churubusco’s Stacia Fester tallied nine points and Cassidy Yant had seven.
Churubusco (5-13) hosts Lakeland Tuesday. Garrett (11-8) visits West Noble Thursday.
Fremont 34 ,

FREMONT — Churubusco lost a close, double-overtime game to Fremont in the opening round of the NECC tournament at Fremont last Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles hung tight throughout most of the game, trailing 9-8 at halftime and leading 14-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Churubusco tied the score at 20 with 57 seconds left in the game. Fremont scored and ’Busco got the ball back with 3.8 seconds left. Yant scored off an offensive rebound from her own free throw to tie the game, sending it into its first overtime.
With 1:47 to play, Churubusco pulled ahead to a three-point lead, but with only 30 seconds to play, that lead was narrowed to one point.
Fester was sent to the free throw line for a 1-and-1, scoring on both, and pushing the lead back to three.
But Fremont responded with a 3-pointer to tie the score — sending the game to its second overtime.
With 43.5 seconds left, Fremont had a 1-point lead, which was extended to a three-point lead with 5.2 seconds left. The Lady Eagles were unable to score, losing 34-31.
Churubusco’s girls will host the sectional tournament this year. The Lady Eagles (5-13) will open with South Adams (10-8). Other pairings include Bluffton (10-9) vs. Eastside (12-6), and Adams Central (2-17) vs. Woodlan (9-10). Blackford drew the bye.
Sectionals will begin Jan. 31 and run through Feb. 4.
