The Vietnam War was being fought and Jerry entered the United States Army and took his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood in Missouri.
After basic training, he came home to get married and took Barbara Ann Deck to be his bride on December 31, 1966 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ege. He then left for the Vietnam War and proudly served his country from 1966-1969.
Jerry was decorated with the Purple Heart for injuries he received in battle. He also received the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the Rifle Sharpshooter medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, and the National Defense Service medal.
Jerry and Barb have lived all of their married life in Churubusco and he was employed for 36 years at Essex Wire and Cable in Columbia City.
He attended Faith Lutheran Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #157 both in Churubusco.
Jerry was a Purdue University sports fan and loved to refurbish and repair old bicycles, collect cardinal figurines, and going to garage sales.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Young of Churubusco; sons, SRA, John L., II, U.S. Air Force, and Tina Young of Columbia City; Mark E. and Jackie Young of Churubusco; daughter, Amy and Josh Middleton of Arnold, Maryland; eight grandchildren; brothers, Ernest and Judy Young of Fort Wayne; Dennis and Eileen Young of Columbia City; and sister, Patricia and Bill Pontzius of Ligonier.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 14, 2011 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 9251 East State Road 205 in Churubusco.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church.
Officiating the funeral service will be Rev. Dr. Lane Burgland.
Military honors will be conducted at the church by the Churubusco American Legion honor guard and active duty troops from the Army National Guard.
