Hamilton, Siddons, Linscomb Champions at Woodlan Invite

Churubusco had ten wrestlers gain wins in the first round. That propelled the Eagles to the top after the opening round with 67.5 team points. Round two wasn’t kind to the Eagle grapplers as they fell to third as a team, dropping six straight weight classes and eight for the round, sending three wrestlers to the championship round. “We wrestled really well in the first round,” said coach Sam Riesen. “In the second round the competition stiffened up a little bit and we didn’t wrestle as well as we could have only sending three wrestlers to the finals.”
The wrestle back round saw the Eagles climb back into second place as they won eight of nine matches in the bracket. In the placing matches the Eagles went 6-3, getting five wrestlers wins for third place finishes. Third place finishers for the Eagles were, Adam Boggess, Zack Armstead, A.J. Herron, Jordan Nicodemus and Travis Liggett. The Fourth place finishers were Clint Bechtold, Jason Nicodemus and Bryce Shively.
All three wrestlers competing for first place won their matches to claim the top spot for Churubusco. Winning those matches pushed the Eagles past Leo’s 186 point total to claim second place with 195.5 points.
“We finished well today getting back into second place. Losing to a good Greenville (OH) team here today and fighting back to jump ahead of a strong Leo team shows a little bit of what we are made of,” stated Coach Riesen.
The Eagles now set their sights on a Conference title. The NECC tournament will be this Saturday at Angola. The conference seedings are out and the Eagles landed two number one seeds, A.J. Herron (16-5) at 140 and Jordan Hamilton (22-1) at 171. There are three two seeds Adam Boggess (22-8) at 130, Zack Armstead (23-6) at 135 and Braxton Siddons (21-4) at 189. Jordan Nicodemus (19-5) is the number three seed in the 152 pound weight class. At 215 Jay Linscomb (14-11) is a fourth seed. Four Eagles are six seeds Jason Nicodemus (12-15) at 125, Sam Siddons (12-15) at 145, Bryce Shively (14-15) at 160 and Travis Liggett (9-12) at 285. Rounding out the roster is Clint Bechtold (10-19) at 112 a seven seed and Austin Boggess (10-18) a eight seed in the 119 weight class.
“The Conference tourney is going to be a lot like these other tourneys, you have Prairie Heights and Fairfield as the teams to beat and we need to match up well against them,” explains Coach Riesen. “We had some kids out during the conference super duals where we finished in third place. Hopefully with all our wrestlers there we can make some noise and bring home a Conference Championship.”
