CHURUBUSCO — Robert Green and his wife Kimberly are bringing back the beloved Thanksgiving meal hosted by the Churubusco Masonic Lodge this year.

The dinner was previously hosted by the Masonic Lodge, but discontinued after the coordinators passed away several years ago.

“We decided to pick it up and run with it,” Green said — and that they did.

He spoke with Kevin Rothgeb, lodge master, and Rothgeb told him the Masons would support him in any way they could.

Green said he’d only expected maybe five to 10 people to participate in the dinner, but after meeting with members of the community, he’s found it’s much more involved than a small meal.

“They told me they used to go through seven turkeys, two dozen rolls and two pounds of butter for this meal,” Green said.

He spoke with area churches, which have offered to help with food preparation and possibly adding more dishes to the meal.

“If someone wants to bring a dish, that’s great, but if not, that’s fine too,” Green said.

Green said anyone who wants to come to the meal is welcomed. He especially wanted to bring back the tradition for those who may be in need — in need of company or in need of a Thanksgiving meal due to monetary reasons.

“Our goal is to help those with no family or those who are in need,” Green said. “But if we can get some volunteers, I’d also like to deliver meals to those who aren’t able to leave their homes.”

He’s also looking for volunteers to help decorate the lower floor of the Masonic Lodge for the meal. Others have chosen to make monetary donations to purchase food and items for the meal.

“Any leftover money will be used to support the lodge and the scholarships they give out to local students,” Green said.

The meal is from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, with doors opening at 11 a.m.

Green said he’s also hoping for an arrival from Santa at about 1:30 p.m.

“I love this community,” Green said. “We were just hoping to give back. If we are able to get something together for Christmas, I’ll do that too. We’re here to help.”

If you would like to help with the meal or if you or someone you know would like to have a meal delivered to you, contact Green at 246-3757.
