The Eagles started the night on defense. They didn’t let Adams Central get beyond midfield on their first possession. Then the Eagles went 58 yards in 10 plays to score on a Jes Percey five-yard run and Kyle Monk’ s two-point conversion pass to Kyle Mathewson, giving Busco an 8-0 lead. “We played pretty hard from the start,” said Coach Etzler. “We didn’t want to see how the game was going to go before we started playing.”
Then the Eagles converted on an interception to score on a Mathewson nine-yard run, making the score 14-0 Busco at the end of the first quarter.
“This is your night,” Coach Lee Etzler told Mathewson as they walked the sidelines. And his night it was. Mathewson broke the career rushing record in the first half eclipsing Virgil Fulk’s mark of 3867 yards.
Busco’s defense then caused an Adams Central fumble which lead to a 79-yard Mathewson touchdown in the second quarter. Mathewson also ran the ball for the two-point conversion. Josh LeFever also had a 16 yard run to make it 28-0. As it looked like Busco was going to shut out Adams Central in the first half, Adam Central’s Dalton Combs threw a 42-yard touchdown to Nathan Busse to end the first half. The score at halftime was 28-6.
That was all Adam Central had. Busco’s Mathewson scored on a 3-yard touchdown on the first possession of the second half. Busco’s tough defense stopped the Jets again.
Then on the punt, Kyle Monk ran it back 87 yards for another touchdown, making the score 44-6. Busco’s Jason Nicodemus scored on a 19 yard run in the third quarter to make it 50-6. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
I congratulated Mathewson on breaking the records and he asked, “What records?” He also added, “I couldn’t have done it without the great job the linemen have done for me all season.” With that run, Mathewson broke Drew Bianski’s single season rushing record. “When I was in middle school I remember watching Drew Bianski set those records. I wanted to prove everyone wrong,” said Mathewson. “I wanted to break those records and I did it tonight.”
Busco now travels to Poneto to face the 8-2, 10th ranked, Southern Wells Raiders. Game time is 7 p.m.
