“It was some tough field conditions out there tonight,” responded Coach Lee Etzler. “We did a really good job of holding onto the football tonight.”
The first quarter was a battle for field position as the teams worked to gain yardage. Throughout the period Churubusco and Culver traded punts and on the final play of the quarter, Alex Zolman found an open Adam Boggess for a 37 yard touchdown pass. A missed extra point gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead after one.
Culver got on the board with a 51 yard touchdown pass and took the lead with the extra point making it 7-6 Culver. But it didn’t take Churubusco long to respond. On just the second play after the Culver score, Jason Nicodemus broke through the Culver defense and scampered 71 for the touchdown. The Eagles lead 12-7 after a failed two-point conversion. Josh LeFever had the Eagles final score as he went 40 yards down the Eagle sidelines. He broke tackles, followed his blockers and jumped over a would-be tackler on his way for the score, giving Churubusco an 18-7 lead at the half.
A steady rain at the half made the field a little more sloppy to begin the second half. Culver put together a solid drive resulting in a four yard run for a touchdown. The Eagles took the 18-14 lead into the fourth quarter where the defense rose to the occasion a couple of times, stopping two Culver drives on fourth down and short situations.
“Our defense had some big stops and played very hard tonight,” recalled Coach Etzler. It was good to see us respond that well in a game like this. This game will make us a better team.”
LeFever led the defense with 10 tackles, Boggess and Zolman each had an interception and Cory Miller recovered a fumble that Eric Kuznar forced.
“We haven’t beaten Fairfield since 2005,” stated Coach Etzler. “It’s always a good ballgame. But we have to beat Fairfield to win Conference.”
The Eagles will host the Fairfield Falcons this Friday night with the game starting at 7:30 p.m. Come on out and cheer your Eagles on to a victory.
