Jason Nicodemus started it off for the Eagles as he hit the hole and fought through the Cougar defenders. He kept his legs going and broke several would be tacklers and ended up with a 18 yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. Following a holding call on the Eagles, Nicodemus ran for 6 yards. Josh LeFever’s run covered 15 yards to the 25 yard line. Nicodemus for nine more before LeFever finished the drive with a 16 yard run for the score.
The Cougars moved the ball across midfield but fumbled the ball away to LeFever who recovered it at the 41 yard line. The Eagles went to the air and had an incomplete pass followed by an interception, giving the ball back to the Cougars at midfield. The Eagle defense rose to the occasion pushing Central Noble back 13 yards forcing them to punt the ball.
Cody Conwell got the call on the first play and responded with a ten yard gain. On the next play Kane Johnson went around the end picking up 22 yards before he was knocked out of bounds. Following a six yard gain by Conwell, Alex Zolman found LeFever on a 21 pass play to the 12 yard line. Conwell ran for another yard and then Zolman connected with LeFever for an 11 yard touchdown pass putting the Eagles up 13-0 at the end of one quarter.
It was three and out for Central Noble to begin the second quarter as the defense set them back. On the third play Nicodemus rambled through the Cougar defense for a 46 yard touchdown run. Central Noble was able to get inside the Eagle 20 yard line but were unsuccessful moving the ball after that and turned the ball over on downs. The Eagles went to work quickly as Nicodemus ran for eight and then 30 yards. Two plays later Zolman rolled out and found his way down the Churubusco sidelines for a 42 yard touchdown run. On Busco’s next possession Conwell ran right through the Central Noble defense for a 53 yard touchdown run making it 33-0 Churubusco. Adam Boggess picked off a pass at the 26 yard line on the Cougars’ first play. Luke McParlan carried the ball across the fifty to the 46 yard line. That set up Cory Miller’s touchdown run of 46 yards, giving Busco a 40-0 halftime lead.
“We had a lot of long runs tonight and you can tribute that to our downfield blocking,” stated Coach Lee Etzler. “As you were watching the ball carrier you saw our guys downfield in good position making blocks.”
A fumble recovery by Joe Zumbrun gave the Eagles the ball in Cougar territory. On third and one, Zolman was scrambling, rolling out to his left and found Adam Boggess in the end zone for a 30 yard touchdown pass. The next time Busco had the ball they used seven ball carriers covering 80 yards in ten plays. McParlan crossed the goal line from one yard out to give the Eagles a 54-0 advantage.
“Unlike last week we were able to get more of our younger kids into the game this week,” added Coach Etzler. “Most importantly a lot of different players had success offensively and hopefully that sets us up for better things in the future.”
The Cougars got on the board with a 19 yard run by Daniel McDonald. Hayden Kilgore finished off the Busco scoring with a 24 yard scamper. The Eagles move to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Prairie Heights Friday night.
