Football ~ Eagles remain perfect

The Eagle defense forced the Hornets to punt on their first series. Then the Eagles put together a nine play drive that covered 62 yards. Cory Miller would run the final 16 yards for the Eagles’ first score of the evening and with the extra point kick by Aaron Zolman Churubusco lead 7-0. Angola would come right back down the field with a solid drive of 15 plays that took the Hornets to the Busco four yard line. It was fourth down and three yards for the first down when the Eagles’ defense rose to the occasion and stopped Angola short and took over on downs at the three yard line. Following a motion penalty Jason Nicodemus  carried the ball to the 18 yard line for a first down. On the next carry Nicodemus burst through the Hornet defense for an 82 yard touchdown run to end the quarter. Zolman added the point after for a 14-0 Eagle advantage.

Angola again drove down the field and came up empty as they went for it again on fourth down and couldn’t complete the pass. The Eagles quickly went to work on the ground with Cody Conwell rushing for 11 yards. Then Josh LeFever picking up 12 and 34 on back to back carries. But the drive stalled and Parker Conrad missed the 31 yard field goal. The Hornets first play from scrimmage was a 52 yard run to the Eagle 27 yard line. Later in the drive Angola converted on a fourth and five moving the ball to the Eagle 11 yard line. Robby Boots found his brother Brady Boots for the four yard touchdown pass cutting the Eagles’ lead to 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff LeFever ran it back to the Angola four yard line. But a fumble by the Eagles gave Angola the ball at the one. The Hornets struck quick with a 31 yard pass and then a 56 yard pass down to the Busco 11 yard line. The Boots to Boots connection proved good for the Hornets as they hooked up for another touchdown tying the game 14-14 with 36 seconds remaining in the half. Now it was the Eagles’ turn to show their hurry offense as Conwell rushed for eight yards and then a timeout to stop the clock. Alex Zolman ran for 22 yards to the Angola 30. After an incomplete pass Conwell picked up 15 more yards. Enter Conrad for the go ahead field goal attempt and he nails it, a 31 yard kick that put the Eagles up at the half 17-14.

Churubusco wasted no time beginning the third quarter as Nicodemus ran 55 yards for the score and a 24-14 lead. The next couple series for each team ended in punts but on the Hornets’ third possession of the second half Zolman picked of a Boots’ pass and the Eagles drove inside the Hornets’ ten before fumbling the ball back to the Hornets.

The Busco defense held the Hornets on another fourth down try in the final quarter and the Eagle offense responded with a ten play drive ending in a seven yard run by LeFever and the extra point was no good, 30-14 Eagles. Another fourth down stop by the defense put the Eagle offense in great field possession. Conwell took the ball and carried it to the five and on the following play he crossed the goal line for another Eagle score, 37-14 Busco. Angola would get a late score with under a minute remaining to make the final score 37-21 Eagles.

The Eagles now open a three game homestand as they will host West Noble this Friday night. Culver Academy will come to town on the 30th and Fairfield will be here the following week.
