“They played us physical and have some skilled kids that cause us trouble,” commented Coach Lee Etzler. “It was what we needed to make ourselves better”
The Eagles came out hot as Jason Nicodemus ran for 14 yards and Josh LeFever went around the end for 19 more, getting down to the Panther 27 yard line. But the drive stalled and the Eagles turned it over on downs. Prairie Heights moved the ball into Eagle territory with a 26 yard pass play. Then the Eagle defense held their ground sending the Panthers back ten yards on the next three plays forcing them to punt.
Nicodemus for nine yards, LeFever for 25 and Layne Fulk gained nine more and the Eagle ground attack was in full force. Until a fumble by Churubusco gave the ball back to the Panthers. On the next series Cody Conwell busted a run for 22 yards, then two more carries for 12 yards. Alex Zolman would call his own number the next two plays picking up 29 yards to the Panther three. From there Conwell would take it in and the extra-point by Parker Conrad gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Churubusco’s defense held the Panthers to two three and outs to begin the second quarter. Conwell picked up 16 yards for the Eagles on their first series of the second quarter, but the fumble bug hit again and the Eagles turned the ball over. On the next possession the offense was in high gear as they picked up 25 yards by LeFever and then 30 yards on a carry by Cody Miller down to the six yard line. A false start penalty sent the Eagles back to the 11 yard line and on the next carry Conwell found the end zone again for a 14-0 advantage.
The Eagles began their next assault near midfield. Nicodemus picked up 16 yards and then Zolman scampered for 34 to the three yard line. LeFever ran the final three yards for the touchdown. 20-0 Busco after three quarters.
“I wasn’t really happy with our lack of focus out there tonight,” explained Coach Etzler on the turnovers by the Eagles. “We had first week mistakes, that is a big concern and we need to fix those.”
Churubusco put together a 65-yard touchdown drive to open the final quarter. Conwell rushed for seven more yards. Zolman ran for 14 yards and Conwell broke through the defenders for a 29 yard touchdown run.On the Eagles final drive Conrad kicked the ball through the uprights for a 38 yard field goal giving the Eagles a 30-0 win over Prairie Heights.
“Feels good to get the shutout,” stated Coach Etzler. “Defense played well and that was a concern, especially with what they do on offense.”
