Richardson, LeFever, Nicodemus

Football ~ Eagles dominate Chargers

The Eagles began the night with an onside kick recovery. Then on the very first play from scrimmage Josh LeFever ran to the left showing run but pulled up and connected with a wide open Jason Nicodemus on a 52 yard halfback pass for a touchdown. The Eagle defense held their ground forcing West Noble to punt the ball away on the next two series. Cory Miller was back deep for the Eagles and returned the punt all the way for a 76 yard touchdown. The point after was good by Aaron Zolman making it 14-0 Churubusco. On the following punt return Miller had another nice return but it was called back by a penalty. But the Eagles went right to work with a 14 yard run by LeFever and then Nicodemus ran the final 29 yards on the next play for a 21-0 Eagle lead.

“The kids played hard tonight,” stated Coach Lee Etzler. “This week’s practices were definitely the most physical practices we have had all year.”

The second quarter West Noble ran the clock with their three yards and a cloud of dust offense with a little help from the 65 yards in penalties by the Eagles. But the Eagle defense proved tough and stalled the Charger 12 play drive. Again the Eagles didn’t waste any time as Cody Conwell ran 43 yards for the score on the second play from scrimmage. Churubusco had the ball for just 46 seconds in the second period. As the West Noble offense again worked the clock as they drove down the field the defense came through stopping West Noble on a fourth down play from the four yard line. The West Noble quarterback was knocked out-of-bounds at the one by Alex Zolman to end the threat.

Starting the third quarter the Eagles picked up where they left off as Nicodemus ran for 55 yards through the Charger defense to the one yard line. Following a five yard penalty LeFever scored on a six yard run. And then on West Noble’s first play LeFever intercepts the pass and returns it 40 yards for the touchdown. The Chargers would get on the board after an Eagles’ fumble that was recovered at the three yard line. But again the special teams came through as LeFever returned the kickoff 90 yards for the score giving the Eagles a 48-6 lead with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter. Churubusco wasn’t done scoring yet in the third as Nicodemus ran it in from 53 yards out for a 55-6 lead after three quarters.

The final period the Eagles scored on a 48 yard run by Chandler Brown for a 62-12 advantage. West Noble would score three times in the fourth quarter with the last score coming as time ran out. “This year’s kids have been a fun group to coach,” explains Coach Etzler. “You wonder how they are going to approach games like this and they came out hard. We’ve had issues in the past years where they wouldn’t take this game seriously and our kids did this year and that was a good thing to see.”

Busco moves to 6-0 on the season and 6-0 in the NECC. They will play out of conference this week as Culver Academy comes to town in what should be an exciting contest. Last year the Eagles defeated Culver 24-21 scoring in the final minutes of the game and then intercepting a pass in the end zone to clinch the win.
