One Year Ago
With a lower average membership (ADM) for the 2011-12 school year, Smith-Green Community Schools expected a downward trend in state funding. SGCS collected $7.6 million in 2010-11 and expected to collect $7.2 million in 2011-12. The ADM was at 1182 compared to 1222 the prior year.  State funding is based on a school’s ADM. CJSHS had large sophomore, junior and senior classes of over 100 students, but CES reported smaller classes in the lower grades.
The Whitley County Gideon Society presented Parkview Whitley Hospital with Bibles for their new rooms.
The Whitley County Commissioners held their meeting at Churubusco High School. Students in one of Mr. Gary Smith’s U.S. Government classes had the opportunity to see how local government worked as they attended the meeting. Students submitted questions for the Commissioners prior to the meeting and Commissioners addressed the questions. Many questions focused on issues with county roads and they also wanted to know the responsibilities of a Commissioner.
Orthodontist Dr. Cohen was leading an anti tooth-decay movement by giving away dollars in exchange for candy received during Trick or Treat.

Over 50 campers at Chain O’Lakes State Park had a chance to meet Smokey Bear and hear his message on fire prevention.
Mahle celebrated five years of Zero Lost Time Accidents.
The State of Indiana had plans to restructure and reform State Government. One of the things being looked into was the consolidation of public libraries. A Stop the Consolidation petition was being circulated and would be presented to the Local Government Reform Committee.
A newly organized law enforcement group was sponsoring the Haunted Jail at Albion’s Old Jail Museum.

A Special Session of the Indiana General Assembly increased state sales tax to six percent effective December 1.
Parkview Whitley Hospital announced that David Lieb, MD, joined their medical staff.
Almost 25 years after the Giang family arrived in America from Vietnam, they returned to Churubusco for the Blue River Church of the Brethren’s 150 year anniversary celebration. The church congregation sponsored the family. The father and two sons came first, then a little more than two years later the rest of the family arrived. Seeking a warmer climate, the family moved to Garland, Texas.
The number of cases of West Nile virus in Indiana continued to rise, the count was at 204.
The South Whitley Public Library was ranked Number 1 in the nation in the October edition of American Libraries.
Matthew and Angela Blair announced the birth of their daughter, Magdelyn Rose.
25 Years Ago
Deanna Delanoy was the 1988 Homecoming Queen at CHS. CHS Junior Class won the float competition in the Homecoming Parade.
Churubusco Town Board of Trustees passed a recommendation to increase insurance coverage on various town structures. Total coverage for town structures went from $568,893 to $1,330,700. The annual premium increased from $2,640 to $4,444.
“The Miracle Worker” was the fall presentation of the Churubusco Fine Arts Productions. Helen Keller was portrayed by Amy Amber and Annie Sullivan was Amy Snyder.
Citizen’s National Bank kicked off Churubusco’s participation in Whitley County United Way Campaign. The goal for Churubusco was $9,725.
Ralph and Eloise Juillerat celebrated their golden anniversary with an open house.
50 Years Ago
Boy Scout Explorer Post 88 joined about 220 Boy Scouts and 40 Scoutmasters at the fall camporee of the Tomahawk Boy Scout District at South Whitley. The boys heard C.N. Scott relate the local Indian history and the adventures of Little Turtle.
The Churubusco Town Board issued a warning against blocking alleys in town.
The average 1961 net farm income of 504 Indiana farmers who kept records with Purdue University’s agricultural department was $11,642 compared to $10,868 in 1960.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Furnas celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by entertaining guests.
“Bird Man of Alcatraz,” starring Burt Lancaster, was showing at the Columbia Theater.
Myers Food Center specials were 10 pounds of potatoes for 59¢, lean ground beef at 49¢ a pound and four pounds of Jonathan apples for 39¢.

Churubusco United Methodist Food Bank received the largest gift ever, $2,451. Owners of the Lucky Lady Bar and Grill, Kris Butler and Sheryl Delauter, were looking for a good cause for their Golf Outing and gifted the proceeds to the Food Pantry.
Farmers & Merchants Bank made a $1,000 donation to the Avilla Police Department to help fund a dog and dog training for their K-9 program.
City Ford announced the acquisition of Trier Ford in Columbia City.
The second annual benefit picnic paying tribute to Megan Young and Andrew Spencer was a huge success.  The auction raised $900 towards the scholarship funds.
Phil and Angela Carroll celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a surprise open house hosted by Dianna Burman and children.
Five Years Ago
The Churubusco Town Council voted to move ahead with a planned water treatment upgrade. Water rates would increase 90% over the next three years.
Governor Mitch Daniels announced that the ISTEP tests would move to the spring. Spring testing was to begin in the 2008-09 academic year.
Tommy Beezley finished third in the final Gas City I-69 Speedway Modified points. He was the champion in ’05 and ’06.
Donald and Virginia Page celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
Ray and Kristine Webster announced the birth of their son, Alexander Bryce.
Chase and Jaime Clevenger announced the birth of their daughter, Ellie J.

Missy Shiriaev, a senior at CHS, was named Junior Miss of Whitley County.
Brad Yoder would begin his duties as assistant superintendent/director of curriculum and special services at Smith-Green Community Schools in January of 2003.
Desiree Pequignot was CHS 2002 Homecoming Queen.
Shawn Kelly, Cub Scout member of Pack #3081 was presented with the Boy Scout God & Family Award.
Bud and Diana Bickle celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. A celebration and renewal of the couple’s wedding vows was planned. They were also taking a second honeymoon in Hawaii.

The new Whitley County Jail was opened for public tours at an open house and dedication ceremonies. The jail replaced the 112-year- old facility.
The Churubusco High School Building and Trades class project was a house in Old Mill Place, under the guidance of teacher Robert Miller.
Ramble Inn advertised they were open all night on Fridays and Saturdays.
Vaughn and Tina Fulk announced the birth of their daughter, Emylee Claire.
Greg and Teresa Salesman announced the birth of their daughter, Allyson Lyn.
Jeff and Denise Smith announced the birth of Pamela Renee.
Tammy and Kirk Magnuson announced the birth of Carey Lynne.

The Churubusco High School Marching Band, under Director Harold Long, received a rating of “excellent” in the State Marching Contest.
The Churubusco Town Board accepted the bid of Amber Chevrolet for a new police car, replacing the 1958 Chevrolet that was in use.
The State Board of Tax Commissioners trimmed the proposed 1963 rate for Churubusco and Smith Township taxpayers. The original proposed rate was $9.37; the final rate for Churubusco was $8.38.  Smith Township’s final rate was $5.98, down from the proposed rate of $6.31.
The Pennsylvania Railroad published a legal notice of a hearing on an application to dispose of its station building. The railroad had already ceased using the tracks from Churubusco to Columbia City.

The CES PTO sponsored a walk-a-thon fundraiser – The Eagle Strut – to raise money for field trips and classroom supplies.  Students and teachers walked over 775 miles, raising $8.908.29.
CHS graduate Bryan Marr joined the Glassley Dental Group in Fort Wayne.
Harold (Hal) Huyghe opened Hal’s Tri-Lakes Tavern on the southeast side of Shriner Lake.
Ralph and Delores Zeigler celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a family celebration.
Five Years Ago
The Churubusco Eagle Football team, with a 7-0 record, was ranked fourth in the IHSAA Coaches Polls in Class 1-A.
Indiana Michigan Power was offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information resulting in the arrest and conviction of persons stealing or vandalizing utilty equipment. The reward was because of an increase in metal theft from utility property.
John Green was presented with the John Whiteleather, Jr. Chairman’s Award during the Thomas Marshall Dinner. He received the award for his significant contribution of time, talent and treasures from the Whitley County Democratic Party.
Willis and Margery Friskney celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering at Don Hall’s Guest House.

Dena Jacquay was named Director of Human Resources for Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Parkview Whitley Hospital celebrated the opening of its new emergency department with an open house for business and community leaders. The emergency department served about 1,000 people a month at that time.
This year marked the 100th birthday of 4-H in the United States.
State health officials identified an Allen County individual as the fifth possible West Nile virus death in Indiana.
Fourteen contestants were vying for the title of Whitley County’s Junior Miss on Saturday. Three were from Churubusco. They were Amber Dafforn, Missy Shiriaev and Amanda Salesman.
Clarence and Ruth Resler would celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
25 Years Ago
C & R Shoes, after 15 years of business, closed their doors. Chuck Ternet said the business had been for sale for a couple of years. After his sister, Janice,  joined the Air Force, he began losing interest in the business. He planned to join the ministry.
An estimated five pounds of chlorine gas escaped a 150 pound cylinder at the Wastewater Plant. The accident was due to a faulty control valve. Four men were treated and released from Whitley County Memorial Hospital.
Both the Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support teams for the Whitley County EMS won first place in the state-wide Annual Governor’s Cup Competition. Members were Ned Gatchell, Fritz Martin, Don Amber and Gene Hicks.
50 Years Ago
Agricultural statisticians at Purdue estimated the production of fresh vegetables in Indiana as of September first. Watermelon production expected to total 105 million pounds, tomatoes, 3,520,000 pounds and cabbage, 27,300 pounds.
Sunday was World Wide Communion. For over 20 years, thousands of Protestant Churches joined on the first Sunday of October to observe the sacrament of Holy Communion.
The 1962 United Fund drive was underway with a goal of $2,125 for Churubusco.
Roscoe Hyndman and Roger Stampe’s names were drawn to take part in the 1962 deer hunt at Crane Naval Ammunition Depot and Camp Atterbury.
The Reverend Russell Brunt, Nazarene teacher and missionary, returned from Trinidad, where he had been since 1957. He shared his message and experiences at the local Nazarene Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Geiger announced the birth of their daughter, Connie Louise.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Flickinger announced the birth of their son, Seth Eric.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Harroff announced the birth of their daughter, Vicki Lynn.

One Year Ago
The Churubusco Town Council voted to increase the water tap fee from $600 to $1,100. The sewer tap fee remained at $750.
Representatives from PNC and the Town of Churubusco dedicated a new town sign that PNC donated. Branch Manager Lee Prescott worked tirelessly with upper management at PNC to donate a small piece of property and the sign to the town. The sign would be maintained by the town and display town information as well as community events.
Parkview Whitley Hospital announced Carrie Hoffman was named director of the Parkview Whitley Foundation.
Grocery prices rose for the fourth straight quarter. A strong global demand for meats and other protein-rich foods was a primary driver behind the higher retail prices.
Orthodontist Dr. Ron Cohen organized a Food Drive to help needy families. In an effort to give back to the community, he was offering $250 off Full Orthodontics Treatment, of which $150 would be donated to Community Harvest Food Bank.
Ed and Carolyn Stringfellow celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
Five Years Ago
The Churubusco Town Park increased in size to over 70 acres, thanks to a donation of nearly 15 acres from Ron and Dave Johnson. The new land would not be developed, but would have hiking trails.
John Black was awarded the 2007 United Way Volunteer of the Year at the Day of Caring kick-off breakfast.
Richard Conrow, owner of C & A Tool, hired his 400th employee. Employment numbers were projected to reach 500 in the near future.
Mr. Lee Prescott was welcomed as the newest member of the Churubusco Rotary Club.
The Bargain House in downtown Churubusco expanded its inventory. Located upstairs was “Your Halloween Headquarters” where you could purchase all your needs for Halloween.
State health officials reported the first West Nile virus death in 2007. The individual was from Floyd County.

The Whitley County EMS team racked up top honors at the Annual State EMS Conference. They had been winners many times over at the State Conference. A new winning category was the Public Relations Award.
The ornamental grass walks continued at Taylor’s Ornamental Grasses, owned by Dave Taylor.
Farmers & Merchants Bank gave the bank robbery reward money to two local citizens who were instrumental in the arrest of the robbery suspects. The people wished to remain anonymous.
George Crowe was the new branch manager of Wearly Monuments in Columbia City.
Governor Frank O’Bannon said the Amber Alert system would be ready to operate statewide on October 1.
Home-based child care for more than five unrelated children required a license.

25 Years Ago
Floyd’s Auto Sales had closed its doors. A public auction would be held to sell shop equipment and auto parts.
The official reenrollment at Smith-Green was 1341. Kindergarten students were counted only half because they attended a half day.
Bohn and Grable Real Estate office moved from South Main Street to 233 N. Main Street. Manager Walter Barnes said the need for more space prompted the move.
The Town Board decided to hold off on awarding a bidder for the storm sewer project because funding for the project was still a question.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Walker celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house. Clyde and Belle started the B& K Root Beer Stand at Wolf Lake.
Brent and Kathy DeWitt announced the birth of their daughter, Alison Marie.
Gary and Sharon Sloffer announced the birth of their daughter, Kristen Alean.
John and Molly Faylor announced the birth of their son, Reid Michael.
50 Years Ago
Work had begun on a 50 acre housing development for the Churubusco area by developer Harold McCoy. The first street, Sunnyslope Park, had been laid out and construction of about 40 homes was planned.
The 1962 Whitley County United Fund had a countywide goal of $26,500.
Under a new program of tuberculin testing of Whitley County school children, the old patch system was discontinued and the Heaf system was used. It was thought to be more accurate than the old system.
Mrs. Abe Nestel asked police to patrol the road past their home to watch for speeders. The first offender was her husband Abe. He was “fined” by fellow Rotarian “Doc” Minnick, sergeant at arms at the Rotary meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. Neil Gaff announced the birth of their son, Marc Elgin.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kimmel announced the birth of their daughter, Robin Sue.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Witzenman announced the birth of their daughter, Rose Marie.
Specials at Shelton’s IGA included T-bone steak at 89¢ a pound, a 25 pound  bag of flour at $1.79 and Smucker’s grape jam was 27¢ for a 20 ounce jar.

The Smith-Green Community School’s Board of School Trustees approved Travis Carie as the choir director for grades 6-12 and show choir co-curricular director.
The National FFA Organization selected from a pool of more than 650 candidates nationwide, the Churubusco FFA Chapter as a 20 star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program.  Chapter members were invited to the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, where they would be recognized for this honor.
Jim Guiff celebrated his 100th birthday with an open house. His grandson, Chad Brenneke, arranged for Luther Gross to bring his team of horses to give Jim a ride.
Kaden Manth won the local NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition. He was first place winner for ages 6-7 and would move on to sectional competition
Ron and Katy Smithson announced the birth of their son, Tanner Clark.
Five Years Ago
The Smith-Green School Board voted to move ahead with re-roofing the Elementary, Middle and High School buildings. The project cost was estimated at 1.865 million dollars and was to be financed with a $1,550,000 bond issuance and $400,000 out of the CPF fund.
Local resident Larry Murphy held his Fourth Annual Vintage Motorcycle Rally at the Churubusco Park. Over 40 cyclists and vendors attended the event.
Pam Rosswurm, former owner of Pam’s Hair Design, opened for business in Turtle Town Plaza where she started “Groovy Do’s.”
The Churubusco Chamber of Commerce welcomed the newest member, Centennial Wireless, which opened for business in Turtle Town Plaza.
Clayton and Ruth Gibson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family vacation to Virginia Beach.
Robert and Laura Hursey celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Ten Years Ago
Smith-Green Community Schools’ official ADM (Average Daily Membership) was down by 16 to 19. CHS and CMS’s numbers were up but CES was down.  Churubusco followed a nationwide trend showing that enrollment in elementary schools was decreasing.
Two of the three men charged in the armed robbery of Farmers & Merchants Bank were sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court. Schimar Reddic was sentenced to ten years in the DOC but two years were suspended. Kareen Gaines was sentenced to ten years in the DOC plus eight years for aggravating circumstances for a total of 18 years.
Washington Center Elementary teacher Kenneth Beck was shot and killed when he attempted to help a stranger in a domestic dispute.
Members of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church participated in a ground breaking ceremony for a new 3,800 square foot expansion.
Turtle Town Players presented “Nunsense”  at the Churubusco High School.
James and Donna Martin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
25 Years Ago
The sixth annual Muscular Dystrophy music benefit with Sharon and Ron Frazier raised $2,100 for MDA.
At the Busco Chamber meeting, Dennis Todak of Dana Corporation presented a petition to be sent to the state requesting a traffic light on U.S. 33 at the entrance of Dana Corporation and Bluffton Rubber. The light would only be used during “spill time” and flashing the rest of the time.
The four Welcome signs at the city limits of Churubusco were resurfaced and painted by Johnny Tom. The cost was $80 per sign, plus paint.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Gross observed their golden wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their daughter and family. In July, the whole family went to Hawaii for the celebration.
50 Years Ago
The U.S. 30 bypass around Columbia City ran into trouble when Fort Wayne Teamsters picketed the project in dispute over health and welfare funds contributions by a sub-contractor.
Nearly 3,000 attended the most successful campers’ jamboree at Blue Lake.
The Town Board re-advertised for a new police car. The previous bid was for a 1962 vehicle but production had ceased, so the new advertisement for bid was for a 1963 model.
A proposed 1963 tax rate of $9.037 for Churubusco taxpayers had been certified by the State Board of Tax Commissioners.
Faith Lutheran Church of Churubusco marked the first anniversary of its founding with special services.
Mr. and Mrs. Amos Keister announced the birth of their daughter, Marcia Lynne.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Streby announced the birth of their daughter, Carla Elaine.
Mr. and Mrs. Terry Brumbaugh announced the birth of their daughter, Debra Sue.
