Area residents enjoyed breakfast at the Half Acre Cafe with Governor Mitch Daniels.
CHS student Shannon Kuznar earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, an accomplishment achieved by only five percent of Senior Girl Scouts across the nation.
Turtle Days was a “Giant” success with Crunch, the 165-year-old alligator snapper weighing 150 pounds, performing for spectators. Crunch is owned by Churubusco resident Rusty Reed.

Smith-Green School Board voted to transfer high school assistant principal Craig Sloan to the newly vacant position created when Becky Perkins accepted a principalship at LaOtto Elementary.
M. Hallowell Chapter of the American Business Woman’s Association honored three area seniors with scholarships. Deanna Craig was the recipient from Churubusco. She planned to attend Manchester College.
The Reverend James Hook was invited to preach at the United Methodist Church as part of the Church’s summer renewal program. Reverend Hook was pastor of the EUB church, which merged with the Methodist Church, from 1955 to 1964.
Bill and Peggy Kreger announced the birth of their son, Jedidiah.
Evan and Stephanie Boggs announced the birth of their son, Dillon Marshall.

Smith-Green School Board approved a three year teachers’ contract.
Whitley County Economic Development Corporation was named a winner in International Marketing Competition. They earned a Superior Award for their General Purpose Promotion entry.
Grand Champion of the Turtle Days turtle race went to Katie Brumbaugh, Tiny Division to Dane Dietz, Small Division, Eric Marquardt and Large Division to Michelle Creech.

The Smith-Green Community School Board voted unanimously to renew Duane Rynearson’s teaching contract. After reviewing 23 hours of testimony in the form of 593 pages and 30 exhibits, the board president renewed his contract. The dispute was whether certain job descriptions were administrative or teaching.
Tri-County Truth welcomed JoAnn Kiehm to their staff. She was bookkeeper and office manager.
Jeff Gilbert was named a local hero for rescuing a three or four-year-old boy at Chain O’ Lakes State Park.
Mr. and Mrs. Everett Troyer celebrated their silver anniversary with an open house.
Philip and Mary Dooley announced the birth of their daughter, Kathryn Lynn.
John and Karen Hood announced the birth of their son, Justin Lee.
Brian and Julie Bohnstedt announced the birth of their daughter, Brianne Kay.
Denny and Cynthia Baker announced the birth of their daughter, Alicia Joy.
Bill and Ilze Shively announced the birth of their daughter, Karen Michelle.

The Churubusco Fire Department honored township trustee Walter Gordon at a banquet. He received a plaque for his nearly 40 years of service.
New, modern medical facilities were planned for Churubusco. A new clinic at West Whitley and Mulberry Streets was a project of Dr. Linus Minick.
Miss Vera Erdly, Green Center first grade teacher, announced her retirement. She had taught school for 40 years.
The Ideal Fish and Game Club sponsored a tractor pull. The winners were Allen Zeigler in the 3,500# class, Cecil Herendeen in the 5,000# class, Larry Herendeen in the 6,500 # class and Charles Geiger in the 8,000 # category.

The Smith-Green Board of School Trustees voted to upgrade the computer servers for the price of $81,621.74. The Board also voted to purchase a print management plan.
The 60th anniversary for the Hunt for Oscar was being celebrated with the annual Turtle Days Festival.
Turtletown Players were presenting “Celebrate Contemporary Broadway.”  The freewill offering was to help support the Turtletown Scholarship Endowment.
Ducks Unlimited, the world’s leading wetland conservation organization, awarded Indiana DU a Comprehensive State Award for a variety of their fundraising and recruitment accomplishments. Indiana earned 7th place among all states.
Bill and Sharon Anders celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

The Churubusco License Branch was placed on the under review for closure list by the BMV Commissioner.  Nine branches were closed and 24 branches were on the review for closure list by the end of the year.
Chuck Matheiu turned in his resignation from the Town Council. He was in his third term.
Churubusco Middle School student Briana Munson was named a United States National Award Winner in mathematics. The Academy recognizes fewer then ten percent of all American high school students. Briana, nominated by her teacher Judith Gallagher, appeared in the “United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook.”

The first Habitat for Humanity house in Churubusco was a step close to completion, thanks to a $12,500 grant from the Whitley County Community Foundation.
PBS had camera men in Churubusco taping footage of the pond near Madden Road where Oscar was sited.  The men were filming a segment for “Across Indiana” that aired on PBS.
C & A Tool Engineering was featured for the third time in an article in Modern Machine Shop.
Thomas and Bonnie Sanders celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house hosted by their children.
25 Years Ago
The main topic at the Town Board meeting was enforcing a local curfew. The Board voted to enforce City Ordinance 308 that indicated anyone under 18 years of age must observe a curfew of 11:00 p.m. If ignored and convicted, a fine from $1 to $25 could be imposed.
Contestants for Turtle Queen were Kim Heck, Jodie Huffman, Christy Listenberger, Jan Books and Dorothy Diller. The 35th annual parade almost didn’t happen but thanks to Lindsey Edwards the parade was being planned and scheduled for the end of June.
Good News Baptist Church announced the opening of a new day care center in the fall.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Brumbaugh celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Ed and Fran Kuehner announced the birth of their son, Jesse Edward.
Dan and Lori Miller announced the birth of their son, Joshua Daniel.
50 Years Ago
J.I. Case showed a first half of the year loss of $4,523,158 compared to a profit of $3 million in the same period a year before.
Reverend Kenneth Tousley became the new pastor of the Wesley and Robinson Chapels.
Whitley County fell short in its quota of 127 pints of blood when the Red Cross bloodmobile visited Columbia City.
Clyde Zolman was injured while tearing down a building. A beam fell on him, cracking his shoulder.  He was recuperating at home.

CHS held commencement ceremonies with 115 students graduating. Alayna Skinner and Allison Norris were Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
The 60th Anniversary commemorative Oscar book was available just in time for the opening of Turtle Days.
Busco’s baseball team lost their bid for Sectional Championship against the Central Noble Cougars.  They ended their season 14-15.
Local father and son, Dick McNeal and son Vic, along with the 1973 Wheel Horse they restored, were featured on the cover of Lawn and Garden Collector Magazine. The tractor was on display during the Chain O’ Lakes Festival.
Gavin and LeAnn Parker announced the birth of their son, Gauge Grant.
Jeremy and Jaime Palmer announced the birth of their daughter, Emma Danielle.
Five Years Ago
The S-G School Board voted to hire Nancy Becker as Director of Special Education. This was a new position due to the reorganization of the Special-Ed Co-op agreement between S-G, NW Allen and SW Allen County Schools.
Matt Bell was sworn in as the 83rd District State Representative.
One hundred eleven students graduated in the 2005 class.
The Council’s members voted the Wheel Tax in with a 4-2 vote. Excise Tax on cars, motorcycles and light trucks was to be $10, small trailers $7.50, large trailers, busses, RV’s, semi’s and heavy trucks, $20. An amendment by Scott Darley added that 20% of the County’s portion be allocated to pave dirt roads.
C & A and Pro Systems tax abatements were approved.
Michael and Julie Dafforn announced the birth of their daughter, Lillian Paige.
Doug and Tara Tonkel announced the birth of their daughter, Zoie Malu.

Former Churubusco resident and U.S. Marine Justin Blake was recognized for saving the life of a young female Marine who had swum out too far in the surf at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He credited River Rescue Training he received while training to be an Indiana Conservation Officer. The young women survived and found Blake to express her gratitude for saving her life. Blake received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for “leadership in the superior performance of duty.”
Gary Brown was named new director at Orr Funeral Home.
Danielle Jones, a student at CES, won first place in the third grade category of the 2000 Indiana Elementary Haiku Poetry Contest. Her poem was selected from more than 3,500 entries.
Brad Bohnstedt was Valedictorian and Courtney Lange, Salutatorian.
Danny and Cheryl Targgart celebrated their 30th anniversary with a family luncheon.
Chad and Amy Jagger announced the birth of their daughter, Alissa Rose.

Shambaugh and Sons Contractors were awarded the heating contract for the S-G School. Their $371,837 was the lowest bid.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Martin celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Tom Beezley was the defending Avilla Modified Track Champion looking for his most exciting year of racing. He was also the defending HOP-CAP Triple Crown Champion. Avilla Speedway officials announced they would offer a $50 bounty to a modified driver who could beat Beezley in the feature event, provided that Beezley continued to win.
Judy and Joe Wiktorowicz announced the birth of their son, Tyler Joseph.
Craig and Phyllis McBride announced the birth of their son, Trent.

Chain O’Lakes State Park was having the dedication of the new State Park, Indiana’s 20th State Park. Principal speaker at the dedication was Gov. Harold W. Handley.  Ralph F. Gates would introduce the dignitaries.
Dale Hursey was the new Gilbert Davis Post 157 American Legion Post Commander.
George’s Casual Shop in Churubusco was having their Grand Opening.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Darr and Mr. and Mrs. James Kirtley donated a new sign to the Churubusco Public Library.
Showing at the Columbia Theater was “On the Beach” starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire.
Mr. and Mrs. David Krider announced the birth of their daughter, Terri Jo.

C & A Tool purchased the MAHLE Clevite property.  C & A Tool needed a facility for high volume manufacturing.  MAHLE announced earlier they would close the Churubusco facility by the end of the year.
Mark Young opened Mark’s Barber Shop in the Central Building on Main Street in Churubusco.
Groundbreaking for a new water treatment plant took place. The two and a half million dollar project was scheduled for completion in 2010.
Oscar the Turtle was to be Grand Marshal of the 2009 Turtle Days Festival parade. In honor of the 60th anniversary of the hunt, several new events were to be available including “Crunch,” a 165-pound alligator snapping turtle, owned and cared for by the Blackwater Turtle Refuge.
Churubusco Eagle Baseball team won the sectional championship and advanced to the Championship Game.
Matt and Amanda Dennis announced the birth of their daughter, Caroline Marie.
Five Years Ago
Katie Hursey was Valedictorian and Deanna Craig Salutatorian of the 2005 Class.
A new law was going into effect requiring every child under the age of eight to ride in a child safety seat.
Civil War Veteran Daniel Jones was memorialized at his grave site in Eel River Cemetery. Great-grandfather of locals Chuck and Dave Jones and Max Myers, he served in the 5th Indiana Light Artillery. Chuck Jones worked six months putting the memorial together and enlisted the help of the 30th Indiana Infantry Civil War Re-enacters.
CES Assistant Principal Becky Perkins took a principal job at LaOtto Elementary School.
10 Years Ago
Stan and Doris Horne announced the opening of the Eagle’s Nest II Grill Room at the Eagle Glen Complex. They also managed the Eagle’s Nest Reception Hall. Family dining at the Grill was available seven days a week.
Orr Funeral Home expanded its funeral home by enlarging and paving the parking lot, remodeling the interior, painting the exterior and adding a new sign.
After 26-1/2 years, Clarence Resler retired from driving a school bus for S-G Community Schools. In all those years, he only missed three days. The first-ever Clarence Resler Bus Driver Award was initiated in his honor and would be given to SGCS bus drivers as merited in the future.
Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, in cooperation with People Preserving History, was sending a team of architectural field surveyors to Whitley County to identify and record all the county’s historical sites and structures.

Hooks Drugs in Churubusco was one of 175 Hook’s  locations to computerize their prescriptions.
When Greg Shanabarger became a volunteer fireman for the Churubusco Fire Department, it made three generations of Shanabarger’s involved in the Department. Greg’s father, Robert had been a member for 24 years.
His father, Ralph was a member when the Central building burned.
Lt. Governor John Mutz said a half million dollars in State grants for training and equipment will help Bluffton Rubber to open in Churubusco. Clifford Chaffee said 75 jobs would be created the first year.  More jobs were to be added in the first two years.
Churubusco’s school cafeteria head cook, Florence Nunchuck retired after 22 years of preparing and serving meals.
Mr. and Mrs. James Braun announced the birth of their son, Derek Allen.
Jill and Mike Miller announced the birth of their daughter, Jenna Lynn.
Larry and Ann King announced the birth of twin sons, Kristofer and Kyle.
50 Years Ago
Chuck Jones was the Churubusco Summer Recreation Program Director in the absence of CHS Athletic Director, James Robbins.
All patrons of Churubusco stores were urged to avail themselves of one of the new off-street parking lots for free parking. The lots were behind St. John Bosco Catholic Church, one behind the American Legion hall and the other behind the fire station.
Many farmers in Whitley County were concerned about the yellowing and browning of wheat. County Agent, Donald Clayton said it was the result of cool, wet weather conditions resulting in temporary anon-availability of nitrate. He felt the condition was not serious and yields should be close to normal.
Members of the Ashley High School newspaper staff visited the Tri County Truth.

Churubusco’s Destination ImaginNation Team captured second place in Global Finals at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Alayna Skinner and Allison Norris were Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the 2009 graduating class.
Black Pine Animal Park opened for the season. The popular family destination kicked off its 14th season.
The public was invited to celebrate the ground breaking of the water improvement project.

Harold Norman was honored by the Indiana Retired Teachers Association for outstanding volunteer community service in Northeast Indiana. Matt Bell was named the new Representative of the 83rd District for the Indiana House of Representatives.
State Senator Gary Dillon was recognized for achieving a 100 percent voting attendance record during the 2005 legislative session.
Robert and Doris Martin celebrated their 60th anniversary with a family dinner.
Ten Years Ago
Dr. Donald Welsh and Dr. Neil Hanni were named as grand marshals for the Turtle Days parade.
Habitat for Humanity broke ground for its newest home in Whitley County at Blue Lake.
The Churubusco Town Council chose to raise water rates by 64 percent. The last rate had been fourteen years before. The increase was to improve equipment and infrastructure.
Mark Fowerbaugh, a math and physics teacher at Churubusco, was the recipient of the DEKKO Teacher of the Year Award.
Guy McCoy was the guest of honor at the Ramble Inn where he celebrated his 102nd birthday with family and friends.
25 Years Ago
Eighty-six students graduated in the Class of 1985.  Robert Shew was Valedictorian and Cindy Stalhut, Salutatorian
Arson destroyed two buildings owned by Beatrice Shew. A suspect was formally charged with arson.
Approximately 150 Chamber of Commerce members and local merchants and business persons attended a reception for BRC Injected Rubber Products, Inc. at the Smith-Green school cafeteria. Mr.
Charles Chaffee thanked everyone for their assistance and said after two days of accepting applications, 601 individuals applied for employment. Seventy percent were unemployed. In closing, he said he hoped that BRC and Churubusco would have a long and prosperous relationship.
Congressman Dan Coats and three other national tax reform leaders urged Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III to immediately double the personal and dependents exemption to $2,000 in any tax proposal.
Terry and Candi Ross announced the birth of their son, Adam Paul.
Sara and David Brown announced the birth of their son, Brandon Bronson.
Dale and Joni Zeigler announced the birth of their son, Jesse Adam.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bunn announced the birth of their daughter, Suzanna Marie.
50 Years Ago
Chosen Valedictorian of Churubusco’s Class of 1960 was Mary Jane Adams.  Salutatorian was Fredonna Miller.
Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Daniels celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house.
Floyd’s Auto Sales, Inc. was awarded a plaque for distinguished service by the Chicago Motor Club. The award was a recognition of the dealer’s service in supplying a driver training car to Churubusco High School.
The Burr Oak General Store was robbed. Thieves punched out the combination to gain entry to the safe. They stole $250 in cash and more than $100 in merchandise. The thieves gained entry through a barred door  forced open in a storeroom.
The H & O Sports Shop officially opened featuring a complete line of sportsmen’s supplies, including baits, tackle, motors, gas, as well as sandwiches, cold drinks and short orders.
