COLUMBIA CITY — Eileen Rose Straub, 92, of Columbia City, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at her home.
She was born Feb. 7, 1924, in New Haven, Indiana, a daughter of Floyd M. and Lauretta (Dirig) Potts. Her formative years were spent in New Haven. She graduated from New Haven High School and continued her education at Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing.
On Dec. 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to Robert C. Straub Sr. and has resided at their home at Round Lake. Mr. Straub died Dec. 17, 2015.
During World War II, Eileen worked at General Electric. A homemaker, she was passionate of the nursing profession and very proud of a daughter and granddaughters who are nurses.
Along with her husband, an award-winning conservationist, their nearly 90 acres of woodlands have been placed in the Wood-Land-Lakes RC&D.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served as custodian for many years and was also a member of the WELCA Deborah Group.
Surviving relatives include four children, Robert C. (Betty) Straub Jr. of Colleyville Texas, Thomas M. (Jane) Straub of Columbia City, Kim B. (Bill) Owen of Avilla and Kathy S. (David) Hockerman of Churubusco; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carole Dorsey, of Palmetto, Florida.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland “Bud” Potts and Floyd “June” Potts Jr.; and two sisters, Janice Frankart and Sharon Thimler.
There will be no visitation or service. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
Preferred memorials are to Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry.
