Eagles suffer two losses to open season

Against Leo the Eagle bats were silenced as they only collected four hits. Braxton Siddons had two of them going 2-3 with a double and drove in the only run for the Eagles on the day.

Woodlan scored first in the bottom of the first inning and added four more in the second. Woodlan put up another run in the fourth to make it 6-0 Warriors. But the Eagles wouldn’t go away quietly. In the fifth inning pitcher Ryan Farlow smashed a line drive over the left-center field fence for a home run to put the Eagles on the board.  The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh and scored three runs, two of which came in on Dylan Herendeen’s single.

The Eagles are a younger team than in the past years as they only have two seniors this season. Coach Mark Grove enters his 26th season as the Head Coach of the Eagles. He’s looking to right the ship from last season which was the Eagles’ first losing season in seventeen years.

“We had some off the field problems that had us struggling throughout the season,” commented Coach Grove. “We need to have a better start this year and have our upperclassmen step in and be leaders to make this season successful.”

Gone from last year is the workhorse on the mound. Marcus Fulk pitched a lot of innings for the Eagles the past two seasons and will be sorely missed. Also graduating was Richards, Grawcock, Tomei and Geiger. They were a big part of the offense for the Eagles.

Coach Grove looks to fill the void in the pitching staff with Kyle and Brent Owen, Farlow, Siddons, Herendeen and Austin Goepfrich.

The defense looks to be set with Jordan Turner beginning his third year behind the plate, Herendeen at first, Justin Norris at second, Siddons at shortstop and Farlow at third. Seniors Chris Sims and Kyle Owen will anchor the corner outfield spots with Spencer Shroyer in center field.

The schedule has been reshuffled to accommodate the return of the NECC tourney and with the Sectional moved up a week. Upcoming games for the Eagles include at Oak Hill on Thursday, at Carroll on Friday and at Fairfield next Tuesday.
