Eagles stop the Marines

The first half neither team could pull away as the biggest lead was only four points by either team. The score was tied at the end of the first quarter 14-14. Churubusco’s Kyle Monk hit a jumper as time ran out to tie the game 28-28 at the half.

“I thought we got off to a sluggish start and Hamilton has been playing teams tough all season,” stated Coach Michael McBride. “They have had very close games with some of the Conference’s top teams.”

The Eagles scored four quick points to begin the second half, before Hamilton went on a seven to zero run to make the score 35-32 in favor of the Marines. The Eagles pulled together and played nearly flawless basketball for the last four and a half minutes of the third period. Lay-ups by Monk and Josh LeFever put the Eagles up by one. With the Eagles on the attack Hamilton players were forcing passes and hurrying up their offense. The Churubusco defense forced turnovers and converted them into Eagle baskets, two by Kyle Mathewson and another by Hunter Nicodemus that put the Eagles up 42-37 as Hamilton called a timeout. Another lay-up by LeFever and a three-point play by Nicodemus put Busco ahead by ten, 47-37 with 2:41 to go in the third quarter. Churubusco ended the third period with a 49-39 lead over Hamilton.

The Eagles slowed the tempo down in the final quarter looking for lay-ups and working the ball around. Both teams managed only nine points in the last period to make the final score 58-48 Churubusco. The win gives the Eagles a 4-4 record in conference and an 8-7 overall record.

“It was nice to get a better balance tonight. We didn’t feel like we played together as a team versus Lakeland,” commented Coach McBride. “Tonight I felt we played better as a team, in moving the ball around and getting good shots.”

Leading Scorers; LeFever 13, Mathewson 12, Nicodemus 11, D. Herendeen 11, Monk 6, T. Herendeen 3, Arrowsmith 2.

Churubusco will host Fairfield on Friday night and will go to Whitko on Saturday to face the Wildcats.
