The Eagles jumped to a 20-12 first quarter lead on seven points from Hunter Nicodemus and six by Tyler Arrowsmith. Jordan Turner hit two three-pointers and scored nine points in the second period. The Eagles advanced to a double-digit lead at the half 43-27.
“I thought we played a really good first half,” stated Coach Michael McBride. “We really executed the things we wanted to do going into this game by getting the ball inside to Arrowsmith and attacking the basket with the drive. We were very good on the boards all night.”
The third period the Eagles fell off a little bit being outscored 13-11 by the Panthers. But the Eagles came back in the final quarter outscoring the Panthers 19-18 for the 73-58 win. Arrowsmith led all scorers with 19 points and Nicodemus added 17 points. Turner scored ten and Josh LeFever added nine points.
“We had really good play from Arrowsmith, Turner, and LeFever on the boards,” commented Coach McBride. “Both Dylan Herendeen and Chris Jones were very productive off the bench. It was a good team effort and solid victory for us allowing us to move to 2-0 in NECC play. We just need to keep working on improving things and focus on trying to get better each day.”
Arrowsmith, Turner and LeFever all pulled down eight rebounds for the Eagles and Nicodemus added six rebounds. Arrowsmith had six blocked shots and forced the Panthers to make a lot of adjustments down in the paint.
“We (as coaches) think it is good to be able to continue playing over break,” explains Coach McBride. “Our kids have been focused and when things are going pretty good, it is nice to keep playing. It will be nice for our kids to continue to play and we will be able to give them a few days off here or there. Conditioning should remain pretty strong, as they won’t have any extended time off. Our players will be grateful for the opportunity to play some games over break instead of just practicing against each other for a 7-10 day period.”
There will be games made up over the Christmas break so come on out and support your Eagles this Thursday at Heritage. And next Thursday will be the match up of Conference leaders as Westview comes to town. Why don’t we fill the gym and show Westview what Busco basketball is all about.
