The Eagles wrestled West Noble in the first match of the day and won by a 40-28 score. Getting a pin for the Eagles was Jacob Ferry (113). Chase Downing (120), Brandon Wormcastle (152), and Sam Siddons (182) all got decisions for the Eagles. Alex Lich (106), Clint Bechtold (138), Jason Nicodemus (195), and Brad Martin (285) all won with forfeits.
Next up for the Eagles was Fairfield and Busco defeated Fairfield 49-24. Alex Lich (106), Chase Downing (120), Shane Shroyer (126), Austin Boggess (132), Jason Nicodemus (195), and Eric Kuznar (220) all had pins for the Eagles. Adam Boggess (145) and Tyler Nevil (170) won by decisions and Brad Martin (285) won by forfeit.
Fremont was the opponent in the third match of the day and the Churubusco Eagles won 51-26 over the Fremont Eagles. Chase Downing (120), Adam Boggess (145), Brandon Wormcastle (152), Tyler Nevil (170), Sam Siddons (182), and Eric Kuznar (220) all got six points for the Eagles with pins. Getting a decision for the Eagles was Jacob Ferry (113). Jason Nicodemus (195) and Brad Martin (285) received a forfeit.
Busco then faced their toughest opponent of the day, the Angola Hornets. The match started off with the smaller weights and Angola took charge putting the Eagles down 15-0 after three matches. Then Shane Shroyer (126) got the Eagles rolling by getting a big pin and six points for the team. Austin Boggess would follow and give the Eagles four more points with a major decision. Next up for the Eagles were seniors Clint Bechtold (138) and Adam Boggess (145). The seniors took control of the mat and both got pins for the Eagles to give them the lead 22-15. Angola would prove tough in the 152, 160, and 170 weight classes. Angola got pins in the 152 and 160 weight classes and won by a 12-10 decision in the 170 class as Nevil fought a tough Hornet opponent, giving Angola the lead at 30-22 with four matches to go. That’s when Busco came alive. Sam Siddons (182) pins, Jason Nicodemus (195) pinned his opponent in 15 seconds making the score 34-30 Busco with two matches to go. The match of the day is the 220 weight with Busco’s Eric Kuznar and Angola’s Beau Hamer. If Busco wins this match, Busco wins. If Angola wins, it comes down to the 285 weight class match. Busco’s Kuznar battled and battled on the mat. It ended with a Kuznar pin and six points for the Eagles making the score 40-30 and giving the Eagles the win. Busco lost the 285 match making the final score 40-36 Busco.
“The guys came out and wrestled as a unit,” explain Coach Riesen. “A lot of people see wrestling as an individual sport, but on Saturday we showed what team wrestling looks like. We fought hard off our backs, never quit; we got big pins and wins when we needed them.”
After a huge win, Busco still had to face the Prairie Heights Panthers. Busco was victorious with a 54-30 win. Jacob Ferry (113), Chase Downing (120), Austin Boggess (132), Adam Boggess (145), Brandon Wormcastle (152), Sam Siddons (182), Jason Nicodemus (195), Adam Harmon (220), and Eric Kuznar (285) all came up with pins for the Eagles. Alex Lich got a forfeit for the Eagles as well.
“We beat some really top level teams today,” stated Coach Riesen. “West Noble, Fairfield, Fremont, Angola, and Prairie Heights are all teams that are always at the top of the Conference. For us to face them and beat all of them in one day is a really nice accomplishment for our guys. We wrestled as a full team today. Our lightweights came in with big wins for us against Fairfield and our heavier weight guys came in with Angola. It was a whole team effort today. ”
The Eagles are back on the mat Thursday night at home against Central Noble for the only home meet of the season. Make sure you come and support the wrestling team to a NECC win!
