Fairfield placed 13 of 14 wrestlers with nine advancing to the final round. The Falcons picked up three wins out of the nine to claim the NECC team trophy. Churubusco and Prairie Heights placed 12 wrestlers, with the Panthers getting the edge as they had all 12 in the top four spots.
The Eagles landed three on the All-Conference team with first place wins by A.J. Herron in the 140 pound weight class and Jordan Hamilton in the 171 weight class. Zack Armstead, Busco’s 135 pound wrestler took second place to claim his All-Conference spot.
Out of the six wrestlers in consolation matches for the Eagles five of them brought home third place finishes, Adam Boggess (130), Sam Siddons (145), Jordan Nicodemus (152), Braxton Siddons (189) and Jay Linscomb (215). Travis Liggett took fourth place in the heavyweight class. Clint Bechtold (112) and Jason Nicodemus (125) placed fifth. Bryce Shively took sixth place in the 160 pound weight class.
“We saw some good kids here today and won some really tough matches,” commented Coach Sam Riesen. “Jordan Hamilton beat a kid that a lot of people thought would give him a run but he really didn’t touch him, Jordan was in control the whole match. A.J. Herron beat a really tough wrestler in the finals. Zack Armstead got a couple takedowns in the championship match. A lot of our kids had good matches today and saw some things that will help them in the sectionals to move on.”
The Eagles begin the quest for Indy this Saturday at the Carroll Sectionals beginning at 9:00 a.m.
