CHURUBUSCO — According to Whitley County Coroner Randy Dellinger, the driver of a sport utility vehicle who caused a crash with a charter bus died before the collision.

Dellinger said it wasn’t yet clear for sure how Edward M. Dahm, 86, died, but indicated he expected Dahm’s death was of “natural causes.”

Dahm’s SUV crashed head on with the bus on U.S. 33 near Blue Lake Road, sending the bus off one side of the road, and the SUV landed on its top on the other side.

The Dec. 22 crash also claimed the life of Dahm’s dog, and 17 people on the Barons charter bus were treated for injuries related to the crash.

A triage station was set up at Churubusco’s fire station to treat the high number of patients.

The bus was reportedly traveling from Chicago to Ohio.
