The U.S. Constitution also requires a national census once every ten years to count the population and determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The 2010 Census questionnaire has only ten questions on it. Look for this to arrive in February. If you do not respond, you may receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Households that do not return questionnaires will be subject to a visit by Census takers.
If someone knocks on your door, according to the Better Business Bureau the big question is, how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? The Census worker will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering any questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home.
Remember, no matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address.
