Busco sends six wrestlers to Regional

Whitko won the team Sectional Championship for the second year in a row with 183 points, followed by Garrett (175), Bishop Dwenger (163), Carroll (156.5) and Leo (125.5) in the top five. The Eagles placed sixth with 111 points and had one Sectional Champion.

“We really had ten kids that gave themselves a real good shot at becoming Regional qualifiers,” stated Coach Sam Riesen. “We wrestled hard and with a lot of heart in every match on Saturday. The kids showed a lot of heart, some of them just came up a bit short.”

Jordan Hamilton (28-1), a state qualifier last season at 160 pounds, won the 171-weight class. Hamilton won all his matches by decisions. A ten to four win over Carroll’s Logan Raypole (23-7) got things started for the day. In the next round he defeated Brendan Berghoff of Bishop Dwenger eight to two. In the Championship match Hamilton beat Whitko’s Austin Striggle (31-3) by decision six to three to bring home the 171-pound title.

Churubusco’s 189-pound wrestler Braxton Siddons (27-6) finished runner-up losing a close match to Bishop Dwenger’s Peter Waikel (31-1) three to two. Siddons won three matches to get into the finals. He pinned Alex Parker of Columbia City, won by major decisions over his next two opponents, defeating Alex Jakacki (20-9) of Leo 8-0 and Daniel Sauders (33-6) of Concordia 10-0.

The Nicodemus brothers both took third place in their weight classes. Jordan (25-7) lost his first match to Cord Feasby from Whitko and then he worked his way through the losers’ bracket. He defeated Feasby this time by a pin for third place. Jason (19-18) won by a major decision and then pinned his opponent before losing to the 125-pound Champion Dylan LeTouorneau of Whitko. Jason then defeated his Carroll opponent and pinned Leo’s Austin Farber for the third place finish.

Adam Boggess (28-11) placed fourth in the 130-pound class. He had two pins and won by decision, before dropping the third place match to Bishop Dwenger’s Michael Mix by decision. In the 140-pound weight class A.J. Herron (21-7) won his first match and then lost to the Champion Justin Beck of Leo. Herron defeated his next opponent and lost the third place match to Shea Novy of Garrett by decision 12-4.

The season ends for seven of the Eagle wrestlers, as does the high school careers for seniors Jay Linscomb (18-15) and Bryce Shively (17-21). Other wrestlers who finished their season are Zack Armstead (28-10), Sam Siddons (15-17), Travis Liggett (11-16), Austin Boggess (11-22) and Clint Bechtold (11-23).

“It’s always sad when you have great seniors and team leaders loose out this early but that’s the reality of this time of year, as any match could be your last,” commented Coach Riesen. “We are really excited for the six we have continuing on.”

The Regionals will be this Saturday at Carroll High School beginning at  9 a.m.
