’Busco halts Railroaders

GARRETT – The Churubusco football team defeated Garrett 22-15 Friday night.

“Garrett has a great team, we just had a short field at times and were able to spread the ball around, and we made a few more plays than they did tonight,” said Churubusco head coach Paul Sade.

The Railroaders received the kickoff and scored on their first drive. A catch by Dillon McCann, and long throw by Levi Follett put Garrett in the red zone. Follett scored on a keeper at the one-yard line on fourth and one to take a 7-0 lead.

Churubusco (3-0) got to work with an 18-yard catch by Sam Wood to advance into Garrett territory. The Eagles scored on third down with a pass thrown by Tom Richards to Joey Emenhiser for a seven-yard TD reception. The PAT was blocked and Garrett still led 7-6.

Churubusco held Garrett to a punt. The Eagles scored on its next possession with a post route by Gage Kelly in the corner of the end zone. The two-point conversion failed, and the Eagles led 12-7 with 6:31 to go in the first half.

Garrett was stopped three plays in and had to punt. Churubusco had a shot at the end zone, but an overthrow to the end zone sent the teams into the locker rooms with the Eagles having the edge 12-7.

Churubusco got into field position with a 20- yard run by Emenhiser. Emenhiser put the ball down the uprights from 18 yards away to take a 15-7 lead with 6:33 left in the third quarter.

Garrett returned the kickoff into Churubusco territory, but a block in the back forced the Railroaders back to their own 14-yard line. Garrett was driving the ball down the field, but an interception by Gage Kelly halted the drive. Churubusco led at the end of the third 15-7.

Churubusco ran the ball down the field. Jake Fulk scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to go up 22-7 with 6:56 left in the game.

Garrett’s Joel Mix ran the ball for a 38-yard play, and led the Railroaders into the red zone. Garrett threw to Jacob Bevis for the successful two-point conversion. Garrett trailed 22-15 with 6:16 to go.

The Railroaders stopped Churubusco and go the ball back at midfield with 4:07 left. Garrett was stopped after four short plays.

Churubusco got the ball back with under four minutes to go, but was stuffed on a fourth and one by the Garrett defense.

Garrett got the ball back on their 26-yard line with 2:25 remaining. McCann caught a first down pass with under two minutes to go. Dane Johnson caught a deep pass for a 30-yard reception. The next pass was intercepted by Churubusco’s Eminhiser to end the game.

Churubuso’s win against Garrett has them 3-0 heading into next week’s game against Eastside

“We got better tonight,” said Sade. “It was a big deal to get a win against a good team on the road.”

Churubusco will try to continue its winning ways against Eastside (2-1). The Blazers opened their season with a loss against Woodlan, but followed to beat Adams Central and West Noble.
