KENDALLVILLE — The KPC Media Group has announced its selections of the KPC All-Area Spring teams, with several Churubusco Eagles claiming honors.
The highest honors were bestowed to Drew Buffenbarger of the baseball team and boys track coach Zach Dock.
Buffenbarger was named baseball’s Prep of the Year following a stellar senior campaign. Buffenbarger was an All-NECC selection, finishing with a .461 batting average, six home runs, 41 RBIs, 31 runs, nine stolen bases, six doubles and one triple. Buffenbarger was also an accomplished pitcher this season on the mound.
Dock was given the honor of Co-Coach of the year, sharing the honors with Keith Thompson of Lakeland. Dock led the boys track team to a second-straight undefeated season and a fourth straight NECC East title.
Joining Buffenbarger on the baseball team are Josh Howk, Derek Bowyer, Jackson Wickliffe and Brandon Jencks. Howk finished his senior year with an ALL NECC selection, .338 batting, three home runs, 17 RBIs, 34 runs, 23 stolen bases, five doubles and three triples. Bowyer, a senior, was All-NECC, batted .359, had two home runs, 21 RBIs, 16 runs, 12 doubles, 10 stolen bases and one triple. Wickliffe, another senior, was All-NECC, batting .360, with two home runs, 20 RBIs, 10 doubles, 10 runs and two stolen bases. Jencks was named All-NECC, batted .372, had 29 runs, 18 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and five doubles.
On the boys golf team, Trey Mayer and Mike Erwin were given honors. Mayer had the team’s best average of 82.6 on 18 and 39.4 on nine holes. He was also a five-time medalist. Mayer shot an 83 at regional, 78 in sectional and was fifth at the NECC tournament (82). Erwin had the second-best average on the team, averaging 87.8 on 18 and 40.6 on nine holes. He was a two time medalist and shot an 80 at sectional.
On the boys track team, Brayden Simmons and Chance Gallmeier were honored. Simmons was a state qualifier in the discus. He was third at regional, a runner-up at sectional and was an NECC champion. Gallmeier, a senior, was the anchor on both the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams.
Senior Julia Folland was the lone selection from the girls track team. Folland was a team captain, a regional qualifier in the 1,600-meter run and was All-NECC in the 800-meter run.
For softball, Mariah Nondorf and Abigail Erwin were selected All-Area. Nondorf capped off her senior season with an All-NECC selection and was named 1st team All-State in Class 1A-2A by the ICGSA. She batted .431, leading the team with 31 hits and 25 RBIs, scored 18 runs, four home runs and had six doubles. Erwin was also All-NECC and 1st Team All-State in Class 1A-2A. In her phenomenal freshman year, she batted .385, had 30 hits, four home runs, 17 RBIs, 20 runs and five doubles.
