The Eagles worked the ball into Tyler Arrowsmith early as he put in nine first quarter points. With the Patriots looking for Arrowsmith the Eagles’ Josh LeFever added four points on drives to the basket. After leading 15-13 at the end of one quarter the Eagles extended the lead to 25-16 in the second period. LeFever added two baskets and a pair of free throws to spark the Eagles. But things came to a halt quickly. With three minutes remaining in the half the Eagles went cold and turned the ball over several times. Heritage took advantage of the Eagle miscues and pulled within one at the halftime buzzer.
“We came out and played really well in the first quarter and had built a nine point lead in the second quarter but we let them back into the game with an 8-0 run to close the half,” recalled Coach Michael McBride.
From the three minute mark in the second to the two minutes to go in the third period Heritage went on a 21-2 run taking control of the game. But the Eagles fought back and pulled within six at the end of three quarters. Dylan Jones scored six of his ten points for the Eagles in the final quarter. The Eagles had their chances in the final minutes as they were within three and turned the ball over. Even as the buzzer sounded the Eagles had a chance as LeFever’s last-ditch effort went off the rim.
“It’s just disappointing, we felt we were prepared for what they were going to do tonight,” stated coach McBride. “We need to understand the importance of every possession. We had the ball twice, down three points late in the game and didn’t score.”
Arrowsmith led the Eagles with 20 points and LeFever and Jones added ten apiece. But the 20 turnovers were a deciding factor in the Eagle loss.
