Born July 6, 1931, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was a son of Frank and Alice (Weiskittle) Kappel. He graduated with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from University of Cincinnati. On March 12, 1947, he enlisted in the United States Army. During the Korean Conflict, he received two bronze stars. He was honorably discharged on April 25, 1956. On Dec. 4, 1976, he married Kenna L. (Heinbaugh) Enyeart. They have always made their home in Columbia City and began wintering in Inverness, Fla., in 1993. He was employed at Allis Chalmers and General Electric, both in Cincinnati, Ohio; Arvin Industries, in Columbus, Ind.; Magnavox in Fort Wayne; and retired from ITT in January of 1993. His memberships included Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 98 and Elks 1517.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Kenna; nine children, Archie (Pam) Kappel Jr. of Terre Haute, Kim (Patty) Kappel of Columbus, Karen (Dave) Hensley of Midlothian, Va., Kathy (Richard) Waterman of Terre Haute, Kris (David) Schmitt of Fort Wayne, Kevin (Lisa) Kappel of Nashville, Tenn., Keith (Brenda) Kappel of Sanford, N.C., Kasey (Micheal) Musto of Cedar City, Utah, and Deb (David) Geiger of Churubusco; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alive Stevens and Jenny (Harvey) Conn., both of Villages, Fla.; and brother, Frank (Pat) Kappel of Cincinnati, Ohio. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Nolt Cemetery. For those who wish, memorials may be made to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
