COLUMBIA CITY – An accident Wednesday involving a pickup truck pulling a broken-down tractor ended tragically in the death of a 20-year-old Albion man.
Teegan Brumbaugh was pronounced dead at the scene after a tractor he was riding flipped over on top of him.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Marc Gatton, Brumbaugh was working for Pettigrew Farms in Columbia City when the tractor broke down. The International tractor was then towed by a pickup truck driven by Jonathan Pettigrew, 33, of Columbia City while Brumbaugh rode on the tractor.
Pettigrew and Brumbaugh were on Old Trail Road and swung into the roadway to pass three juveniles who were walking east on the road. When the truck began reentering the eastbound lane, the tractor’s front wheel left the roadway and went down an embankment, causing it to hit a utility pole and flip over, Gatton said. The truck remained on the road, and Pettigrew was not injured, he said.
The sheriff’s department was notified of the accident at 4:45 p.m. The crash happened on Old Trail Road just east of Miami Village and 557 feet north of Hartman Road, Gatton said.
Brumbaugh was a 2014 graduate of Churubusco High School and well-known for his athletic talents in football and in Noble County 4-H, where he won several grand champion livestock awards. He would have turned 21 on Father’s Day.
